Hypothetically, what if I can't find my ticket when the inspectors come for whatever reason (battery died for eticket, or maybe kept in overhead suitcase and didn't check there or dropped under the seat etc) and I get a PF. But I then find it when am still on the train and journey is ongoing? Does the PF get cancelled?

What if I only manage to find it once I am home?

The requirement is to present a valid ticket when requested, and a Penalty Fare is charged if you cannot present a valid ticket. There is no entitlement to the Penalty Fare being cancelled if a valid ticket is produced at a later point (though it does not hurt to ask).

I've never really considered it too big an ask that they require you to have your ticket available throughout your journey. It's not particularly difficult, and I can see why inspectors might be suspicious of people who can't.

No, unless you manage to argue under compelling reasons that the PF should be cancelled.

In the case of paper tickets, two people could be using one ticket but one claim that they'd misplaced theirs, but present the second person's ticket later on.
