Lost Property on TransPennine

Hi guys, I left a black rucksack on the 18.30 train from Manchester Piccadilly to Huddersfield on the 28th of July.

I’ve tried everything to get it back, but to no avail. I reported it as missing straight away on the MissingX website, but it’s been 3 weeks and I haven’t come across it yet.

Both Manchester Piccadilly and Huddersfield train stations have said a black rucksack like mine hasn’t been handed in, and I’m confused as to where else it could possibly be. I’ve posted in lost & found groups and even visited my local train station; the woman behind the desk said 2-3 weeks is more than enough time for an item to be processed and logged onto the system, if found.

I literally don’t know what else to do.

Stolen, most probably, I'm afraid. Not everyone is honest enough to hand things in, particularly not if it contained any items of value.

That’s the thing, there are two handheld consoles inside which are obviously of value and I can track them..they haven’t been turned on.

Would they need an internet connection to tell you that?
If so, it's certainly possible someone has taken it and knows not to connect it to the internet.

Another possibility is that the items went with the train back to its home depot and were not noticed and thus handed in at Huddersfield or Manchester before then.

They would have to connect to the internet eventually if they wanted to use it and I would still get a notification if the device has been turned on.

Yes, only phones and tablets from Apple and Samsung (Google is opt-in to it, which is a horrible idea, off-topic, the others are opt-out, ) will allow you to roughly locate a offline or turned off device (through radio relay of other devices from that brand, same tech as AirTags). No laptops or other devices have those capabilities.

I was told I’d be contacted if the rucksack does turn up at either station and I haven’t been. I’ve even contacted other train providers just in case someone handed it in elsewhere.

That's what I meant though, that it hasn't gone to either station - it's potentially gone with the train to the depot.

Ah I get you, sorry! Do you know if there’s a way to contact the depot and where it could be.

It should eventually get sent to a station lost property office, but I don't know how often they go about this - I understand some depots only send anything found on a train every week or even less frequently - hence it may be delayed in appearing.

That does of course suppose that this is why it hasn't appeared yet and not that it's been "lifted" by someone from the train.

It shouldn't end up at a depot as once the train is disposed of by the guard : they will do a walk through and most drivers will do a walk through themselves.

Once at a depot it generally isn’t left, a team of cleaners quickly board the train.

Sadly if you haven’t been contacted yet it probably means someone has taken it.

Out of interest, did you report it to the TPE social media team? Years ago they’d just ring the conductor. For a while it’s seemed like social media teams just use copy and paste replies rather than be proactive.

I did, yes. Initially I phoned TPE and they just directed me to the MissingX website, I was very frustrated as I’d already registered the item as lost on MissingX by that point and I tried explaining that to them but they weren’t very helpful. I then contacted TPE on X and they actually said they would email Huddersfield station but unfortunately they don’t have it

The train that operated your service went back to Piccadilly at 1926, arrived there at 2011, then went to Ardwick depot at 2026. I'm not sure now how often they send their lost property, it used to be once per month, so chances are if it has been found, it will be at Ardwick Depot, if you contact the Twitter team with this info, it might give them something to go on! I will e-mail Ardwick Depot and ask them what they do with their Lost Property

So I contacted the team, they’ve said anything at the depot would eventually be sent to Piccadilly and they don’t have it either

It depends how often Ardwick send out their lost property, it used to be once a month, so don't give up hope yet! i'm still waiting for a reply from them!

A lovely police officer has been on the case, she reviewed the cctv and said the conductor took it off the train..he’s obviously put it somewhere. The good thing is, it hasn’t been stolen but I haven’t heard back within a week after she said she would contact Manchester Piccadilly train station.

They need to contact Transpennine, who will be able to work out who the Guard was, and ask him where he handed it in

Lost property is unfortunately a total minefield to track down sometimes because so many things could have happened such as:

• taken off en route and handed to staff,
• taken off at terminus,
• taken off by a guard / crew
• remained on for the next trip at next terminus
• ended up at depot
• handed in by a passenger at any point
• sometimes, stolen

You can really go down the rabbit hole trying to find something and it can take up a lot of energy, as you have found out. Eventually it will normally be collated at some sort of "centralised" point for the TOC but that can be weeks sometimes longer.

Yeah it’s definitely frustrating, it’s been over a month now.

Yes I don’t know why it’s taken them over a month. Luckily I got here just in time, I went to lost property at the train station but btp had come and seized the bag..it was right next door where the police were.
