I post on another forum got me thinking about lost perks through the years.

Does anyone remember silver standard introduced by BR and continued by GNER? This was basically a dedicated coach for full walk on open tickets with a tea / coffee from the trolley. GNER stopped it because they could guarantee space for everyone with said ticket. It was normally the coach near the buffet.

I am sure MML had a 3 class system. A more expensive first that included a meal and standard open tickets could sit in the other first class seats off-peak.

Likewise I am sure at the beginning of GNER full fare open tickets would be entitled to weekend first without the upgrade charge. (I am sure AP tickets were not allowed to upgrade at all). No idea why the open people now need to pay considering what they have paid already.

Finally the gold card first upgrade has gone since I last lived down here.

Any others people miss?

Virgin west coast certainly had a go at operating a 3 class system for a short time. It wasn't terribly successful though.

Is my memory playing tricks, but pre Virgin didn't BR on certain peak time ICWC trains on at least the Euston-Manchester route have four classes, Standard, Superstandard, First Class & Pullman First?

Staff perks lost included a 1p off tea in Travellers Fare buffets "OCS tea - or on company service tea" . did not apply to coffee , as it was assumed only management could afford it.

Way too generous, about on a par with supermarket loyalty schemes!
