Hello all!
I'm in a bit of a pickle so I thoaught I'd better ask for some advice. I'll try and keep this short.
I have just received a red letter from Northumbria with a £210 fine! It doesn't detail what it is for, so I'm hoping it's some kind of scam. The only thing I can think that it might be is an issue I had with a Metro fare over a year ago.
The situation was, I was travelling to uni to hand in an essay near the end of the year. All the ticket machines at monument were out of order (I'm not sure how I'd prove this though? Would that have it on file?) and I had misplaced my pass a week or so previously (Sunderland uni give out a free pass for anyone living in Newcastle) so I just hopped on and thought nothing of it.
It being the end of the year and me being a thoughtless person I completely forgot about it. I did get one letter saying that I can appeal, so I called them and told them about my pass, yet they said they could do nothing and didn't have records of those who own passes?! I still had deadlines so I just got on with it and moved back to my hometown about a week later. I assumed it was no big deal, but if this letter is genuine I'm really in trouble being that I'm literally penniless.
I'd really appreciate some advice to minimise the damage my carelessness has caused!
