For anyone that knows or has recently attended a LOROL Train Driver Assessment, did you sit this or is it true that LOROL have withdrawn the Mechanical Comprehension Test?

Thanks in advance for your replies

Hi, no I haven't applied yet, it's just that I heard a rumour that LOROL have removed it as alot of good people are failing at this stage.

Give them a call or email HR and good luck

They have removed the Mechanical test because it is not relevant to the role of train driver anymore especially not with the 378's that are all run with computers.

I am on the course now but the assesment process was slow. Expect long waits for results etc.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????????????????

So you don't need to demonstrate that you have a systematic & methodical approach to fault finding any more?

Computers will not tell you everything.

So if all or most of the systems on a unit or loco are predominantly computer or elcelctrical based, how is mechanical comprehension supposed to help? In any case, you would probably be on the phone to a fitter anyway.

Can you always get a signal?

There's enough good people available to the industry, without the need to dilute the standards. I'd still say that mechanical problem solving, and a general empathy for machinery, are very relevant to the driver's role. It's no good having drivers that can't work out how to couple two air pipes together (and believe me, they exist).

I believe the mechanical test at Lorol has been replaced with the fault finding test instead. However some companies have removed it altogether. Surely during training drivers are taught how to diagnose and fix common faults anyway?

You are, but it's not quite the same as sorting something out in the pitch black & pouring rain.

Drivers earn their money when things go wrong!

Hi there,

I have recently completed all the assessments and managers interview and have thankfully passed all stages:)

I can confirm that during the assessement I never had to do a mechanical comprehension, even though it was included in the revision booklet sent out before the assessment.

So apart from GBT, TRP1/2 and the Reaction Test, what other tests do LOROL do?

Sorry about the very late reply in response to the previous post relating to the LOROL assessment;

The whole assesment involved the following tests:

Part 1: Involved Group bourdon test and the faulty analysis test

If you pass that then the next stage is;

Part 2: Listening to an audio tape and reading witten instructions which are then taken away from you, which you have to remember key information from memory.

Next test was the dials, then a personality questionaire including writing about 3 different examples of dealing with three different types of situations. E.g One was handling an emergency situation etc.

Then after that was the reaction test, and then to finish it all off a hour and a half structured interview.

If you are successful in this stage then its:

Part 3: Which was the most relaxing but again structured managers interview.

Part 4: Medical examination

Hope this helps.

Dear DG85

Many congratulations on passing and getting the job you must be over the moon! :D

Thankfully I passed part 1 and I have got Part 2 coming up shortly and I am very nervous as this is the first time I have been through the train driver recruitment process!!
I just want to ask what were the over 2 examples you had to write about dealing with 3 different situations? And did you find it stressful?
DG85 thank you for all your help and contributions on here its been really helpful!! :D

Many Thanks

Totally dissagree, OK so you are driving computer based trains what if you want to go to a different company that has the mechanical test as standard, I for one would accept a qualified driver that has completed the mechanical test against one that hasn't. If LOROL are loosing candidates because they are failing the mechanical test their sifting needs to be audited as they are sifting candidates that are not up the the standard, I am with EWSlucas on this one. For you to say that the mechanical test is not relevant you must have experience of train driving or at least train driver recruitment do you not???????? I think not if you are on a course, just started in the grade well not yet of course as you need to pass your assessments yet and quoting utter rubbish that the mechanical test is not relevent. I stick with my statment that LOROL have a poor recruitment process!!!!!!

When you control the speed then you have to get yourself into a nice rythem, not too fast nor too slow and try not to fluctuate...ie very fast then very slow then very fast etc etc.

When the computer controls the speed there will be no way you can keep up. Once you lose track (and you will) sit back, take a breather and dive in again and repeat when you get lost again.

This part is designed to see how you breakdown and how you cope rather than seeing how fast you can go. Good luck!
