Aren't all the main parties pro Europe?

I do think Gordon Brown is a liability who was far from the successful Chancellor he lieks to think. His actions on gold, PPP's, Pensions, the financial sector all now look to be poor judgements. Yet there he is all over the TV trying to convinCe us that he is the best bet to lead the country through the difficult times ahead! Excuse me, he didn't do a very good job when things were going well! And to say that the recession is a global problem that is nothing to do with him really admits that he didn't bring the boom before the bust either! As for his ridiculous and unjustified bigot remarks, wel, words fail me. If that's how he misunderstands things, no wonder he is such a disaster!

Phew, I've waited a long time to get all that out of my system!

That isn't a good enough reason I am afraid, as good as he is, just look at the state we are in now after MR give-away Brown sold us down the river, literally!

I really do disagree with that statement

having lived in 2 other european countries, england really isnt that bad

Cant see Cameron keeping a labour mp in as Transport Secretary only in the case of a hung parliment which could still happen, however im sure things will change under a tory government probably for the worse <(

Aren't all the main parties pro Europe?

The Tories are not in favour of joining the Eurozone and are opposed to further integration into Europe, although the party is split between Europhiles (like Kenneth Clarke) and Eurosceptics (like Ian Duncan Smith)

The Lib Dems are in favour of Britain replacing the pound with the Euro, but in the run-up to Brown's proposed referendum on signing up to the Lisbon treaty (which never happened <( ) Clegg was calling for a referendum on whether Britain should remain a member of the EU or not.

As for Labour, I know it's now a Europhile party (although under Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock Labour were stridently anti-Euro) but that's all I know.

Hope this helps put the record straight.

No one is advocating pulling out of the EU though are they? As for further integration, I thought we were as integrated as possible, except for the currency!

From a Welsh point of view, might as well take orders from Brussels as London lol

So it's quite possible he's more interested in doing the job, and as a peer can technically serve any government if invited. Why not appoint him in capacity of Rail Minister, leaving the overall Transport with Theresa Villiers. She has publically stated in favour of investment in rail and not having direct experience may benefit from his expertise and if they are happy to continue with his proposals, they would be able to achieve it far quicker keeping him in place.

I couldnt stand the though of Theresa Villiers having anything to do with transport, shes woefully ignorant of transport issues. Her only experience of anything is 3 years as a barrister and 4 years teaching law.

She is known as anti-aviation and has advocated no expansion at Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick or any new airport, but this stupid idea of making HS2 go through Heathrow, sheesh totally demented.

All the better to have Adonis on hand to make sure the money invested in rail goes to the right projects.

Having said that, it appears to also be in Adonis' proposal under section 63b here - http://www.hs2.org.uk/assets/x/55872

Not quite, we are not part of the main part of the Schengen Agreement, meaning that passport checks are required when travelling between the UK and other EU countries. From a rail point of view, that is bad news for the potential expansion of international rail services beyond the existing Eurostar destinations because of the consequent requirement to install expensive border controls at all calling stations.

Interestingly, there are a few countries that are not even in the EU and participate in Schengen: Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. Switzerland is particularly surprising given it is considered far more anti-Europe than the UK.

HS2 reccomended against it in their report but he tasked them to have a second look and make a report to see what it would actually cost (mainly as ammunition against tories I think). HS2 is also working on the Birmingham to Leeds/Manchester sections now and due to report on that by middle of next year.

No its good governance, if you want to win an argument you have to produce the evidence to backup your claim.

The Euro should have been the British currency years ago, that was down to the British patriotic folk who do not understand monitory systems
