I live in Ayrshire, so obviously the only way to at Even see class these trains is 2-3 hours of traveling to glasgow, if i wanted to bash both in the same day, would it be an idea to book a hotel in Glasgow, and get a return ticket to somewhere they operate?

Something simple like a Glasgow - Perth - Fife - Edinburgh - Glasgow circular would net you one or two of each. Easily done as a day trip so no need to book a hotel, but if you were looking to spend a bit of time in each location you may wish to do so at the moment, what with the early last trains.
