Similarly, here is a site which doesn't attempt to perform an analysis of splits for every user request, but apparently just refers to its own small dataset of popular 'splits' : http://www.splityourticket.co.uk/

Performed a random search out of interest and noticed "Information last checked: May 2008". I can see the problems this might cause.

But seeing as the program is not web based then is it illegal for people to use it (or is this a grey area?)

No-one knew, until someone posted on here that it did use national rail enq, so I wouldn't worry too much about not knowing, the problem is someone who distributes such software saying that it is legal, when it clearly isn't.

They wouldn't be huge rises. They would be rises of sufficient size to cover the lost revenue from split longer distance fares. As the shorter journeys are much more numerous the lost revenue would be much more thinly spread over these fares. It would still be an increase though, which would be unlikely to be popular. At the moment the extortionate long distance fares are effectively cross subsidising the cheaper-per-mile short hop fares. If large numbers of people started splitting this revenue from the long distance journeys would dry up. At the moment few people split so it doesn't really matter.

Someone mentioned Moneysavingexpert, they have had (for some time I will add) mention that they are building a tool to calculate split ticketing. (towards the bottom: moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-train-tickets)

MSE has a very large user base (apparently 6 million subscribe to the-mails), if they were to succeed increating such a tool i wonder how much more prevalent split ticketing would become.

Interesting program and code, but ultimately something that will possibly cause more problems than it will solve, and indeed a program that doesn't totally solve something that it should. I do think its a very good try though, and I would love if something like this could be properly developed and maintained like the normal fare sites. Coming from a computer scientist / programmer, I certainly would not fancy having to work on a fares system (considering how complicated and convoluted our current system is).

Well you can guess from some of the backwards analysis I posted here that I might be on that list, but I didn't go so far as to decompilng it, I know pretty much what the code does from inspection so there isn't any need really.

If the fares table where freely available to use through either an API or for download, (I don't know if the NFM includes fares or not, anyone care to tell?) then you could do essentially anything you wanted and run as many algorithms as you wanted on the routing manual and fares manual and really come up with some good cheap fares. But even then I think that Atos Orgin only publish a closed version of the manual so that would need some form of 'theft interface' to get the data still. And it's written in C, harder to de-compile than Java (Partly because I program in Java and non-standard C)

I'm not sure what you're trying to prove here. Exhaustively searching for splits will involve a lot of searches, there's no way around that.

Simply loading www.nationalrail.co.uk in my browser results in 64 HTTP requests - in that context 152 HTTP requests really isn't such a big number...

I've only just come across this thread, what bothers me most at first impression is that the OP has made several posts in the last 48 hours, none of which acknowledge or provide any counter to the apparent restrictions to screen scraping the NR website.

Because there aren't any counters to it, it's in breach of the T&Cs of the website, and it's YOU that is breaching the T&Cs if you know about it...

Examples which exhibit problems with the program:

e.g. CTM-PCD. Chatham Pencoed 19 January 17:24 £79.50 Single Split Done £61.50

The split is at PAD, so £22.50 CTM-PAD and £39 PAD-PCD.

But there is an alternative "via SAL" route for just £19 which Splitix doesn't tell you about - and, worse, doesn't allow you to select.

And if you are going to split in London, you might as well travel via Victoria (which gives you CTM-VIC for £12.70 Offpeak Day Single) and add Oyster single VIC-PAD for £2.00. The total of £14.70 is a lot less than the £22.50 HS1 + U12 combo and hardly any slower to Paddington.

That might well be true, if you had to leave at that time - but the "via SAL" route does the job for £19 if you can leave CTM an hour earlier.


Splitix is a good idea and might be a useful tool in the armoury of finding cheaper fares, but it's not quite good enough yet. Happy to see later versions though ...

On the general matter of how effective any software can become in finding the cheapest combination of tickets for any journey, the following Adjudication by the Advertising Standards Authority in the last few weeks might be of interest:

Some extracts:-

A website, for a train ticket comparison site, stated "Splitting your train tickets could save you up to 63% on your next train journey, all simply by buying tickets for each segment of the journey separately instead of one ticket for the whole journey ... When using the Split Ticketing train ticket price checker and booking service above all possible split train ticket combinations for your train travel are automatically performed for you.

In light of this we considered that Transworld Leisure had not substantiated the claim that their website showed "all possible split train ticket combinations". We therefore concluded that the ad was misleading.

We also told them to not make claims unless they could substantiate them.

. . . The program is focused around my needs and use cases - so I'd be particularly interested to hear how generally applicable and useful anyone thinks it is!

As long as the program is for personal use and no advertisement makes claims which cannot be substantiated, then this Adjudication will only be of passing interest to you - though it may also be a timely reminder to anyone else thinking of making claims about saving money on rail travel!
