Hi everyone,

I’m building a rail network model for the North West (especially Merseyside/Liverpool area) and I’m trying to find a good map/dataset that shows both passenger routes/stations and freight corridors/terminals .

Does anyone have:
  • a PDF/diagram map that includes freight + passenger for the Liverpool City Region / North West, or
  • a GIS/GTFS-style dataset, route schematic, or even a working timetable map that’s suitable for building a node/edge network?
Anything like Merseyrail/Merseytravel passenger maps plus Network Rail freight corridor/terminal info—ideally combined or easy to overlay—would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Will this help ?

You can zoom into Liverpool area; and, as it will be out of copyright, you can edit in an image editor if you want. Other dates available from the NLS website.

RCH maps were great for showing company lines but there was a dense network of private lines.
I lived on the Wirral in the late 60s and was fascinated by the MDHB (Mersey Docks & Harbour Board) lines.Several public roads ran across the docks from Birkenhead to Wallasey crossing swing bridges which were dual use road and rail. Then there was the Lever Brothers line from Port Sunlight to Bromborough Pool and the Manchester Ship Canal lines in Ellesmere Port.
Even with the rundown of goods traffic it was amazing as a teenage boy to cycle freely through the maze of lines, docks police waving you on from their little raised control posts and no security restrictions preventing access. The other side of the river was the same but almost foreign, the Mersey was much more than a river!
