In a number of weeks time I am traveling from Inverness to Doncaster on a Sunday.

I will be catching the 0940 VTEC from Inverness. Looking at the itinery of station stops I see that the train arrives into Edinburgh Waverley at 1321 but doesn't depart until 1354, a wait of 33 minutes. In fact it even suggests that I change at Waverley to arrive at Doncaster a bit earlier.

This has probably been asked before but I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.

I was just wondering if anyone knows any other long waits at stations on normal services, apart from at terminuses and on the sleeper services.

PS. Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this but if not then please move it mods.

Probably one for UK Railway discussion but anyways
Assuming this is the 12th March or thereabouts as on Sundays before then 1E17 (the train you mention) departs Waverley at 13:30; the probable reason (and I am guessing a bit; if anyone can correct me please do) is that the Forth bridge is shut that day; with replacement buses from Dalgety Bay to Waverley. Trains are probably being held at Waverley for pax coming from Fife by bus; therefore. Long story short it isn't a regular occurrence on this service.
In terms of services elsewhere the longest wait at Haslemere is 14 minutes (0722 Portsmouth Harbour-Waterloo); and the longest I can think of is the 1815 St Pancras-Leeds; which gets 26 minutes at Nottingham

It's actually not until the first week of May when I'll be traveling and it clearly states that the train depart EW at 1354 even though it arrives over half an hour earlier. On the VTEC website it does give an option to change at Edinburgh to catch an earlier train that departs at 1350.

Possibly one of the Waterloo-Poole Stoppers at Southampton/Brockenhurst?

Ah yes; probably something similar then. Unless you're in a perishing rush to get home I wouldn't recommend catching that earlier train from Waverley as both the station and the earlier train concerned will probably be chaotic and if you stay on the train you've got a seat all the way through. Just my two penneth :)

The 17:16 Newcastle to Glasgow via Carlisle has a 25 minute wait at Carlisle. There are similar long waits for other trains on that route.

2B39 1339 Waterloo-Poole sits at Southampton Ctl for 19 minutes and then another 37 minutes at Brockenhurst! It takes 3hrs 28mins to complete the journey end to end arriving at 1707. Not that anyone would

A passenger leaving 4 minutes earlier could jump on 1W27 1335 Waterloo-Weymouth and arrive in at 1535!

*edit* beaten to it

I have just booked a first class ticket on the train for £42.90 (£24.75 standard class, so worth the extra £18 I reckon) with my railcard. If I had wanted to change at EW to catch the marginally earlier train a first class ticket was £73.60!!

Not a current example by any means but a remember a trip on the Cambrian Coast Line in the early to mid-1970s where a Pwllheli-bound service had about an hour's wait at Barmouth. It was actually shown in the timetable as two separate services but the same DMU operated both legs.

Not absolutely sure what the reason was but the local pick-up freight which still operated then crossed us in the station, which could have had something to do with us.

I seem to remember the train crews turned off the engines and went away for a cuppa.

If it's the one I'm thinking of it was timed for school traffic into Tywyn and arrived at Barmouth in time to cross the Harlech school train which then connected into the 10.00-ish off Aberystwyth which was the prime morning train. ISTR there wasn't time for it to reach Porthmadog to cross the next Up, so it had to kick its heels at Barmouth. I'm sure I spent a wet day on holiday trying to rewrite the timetable....and failing.

The York-Shrewsbury/Aberystwyth mails also had very long stops even by mail train standards.

Ignoring night trains, the other one I recall was the afternoon Up Mallaig in winter, with over an hour at Fort William.

I believe some of the Corby - St Pancras services have a lovely wait at Kettering at some times of the day

For example the 1953 Corby to St Pancras International, sits at Kettering for 24 minutes (http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/C80561/2017/02/15/advanced)

And as a kick in the teeth for any passengers there isn't anything they can do (unless the service from Nottingham is a few minutes late)

POSSIBLY...except that this trip would have been in the school holidays or a Saturday and it would have been a mid to late afternoon working...
