For the sheer quantity of station stops Great Malvern to Weymouth has a total of 32. Think the journey time is just over 4 hours. I know the last train from Weymouth to Waterloo stops at over 30 and takes about an hour more than usual.

As I mentioned to another member by PM recently, in 2003 there used to be a Penzance - Milford Haven service (It was Wessex Trains and I think it was a 158 ) taking 9 hours and 5 minutes (0654 from Penzance - 1559 at Milford Haven) and 46 stops.

The return was 8 hours 32 minutes.

Not running any more though but it is one of those 'should have done that' things. Well perhaps :D

Those crazy 158 journies along with the Manchester-Penzance via the North & South also used to have a good trolley catering service. One of the base stations was at Newton Abbot & freshly stocked trolleys where exchanged on all manor of long, medium & even some local services throughout the West of England. FGW withdrew these shortly after taking over from Wessex Trains :(.

I'm informed there's an 06xx Waterloo to Weymouth that stops something like 42 times :o

06.56 Middlesbrough - Carlisle is the longest single journey on a 142 AFAIK.

Some do Cardiff-Fishguard so assumably the SuO Fishgurad -Hereford too ? :D :D

Not my area of the country so no idea if they do work that service. Middlesbrough - Carlisle is 109 miles and exactly 3 hours. And I've done that journey twice!

I do Cherry tree-Preston in a 142 at least once a week, 22 mins, and that's enough for me :D Can't imagine doing the Tyne Valley Line in one, though the massive windows would make the journey pleasent :D

It has been a good journey on both occasions, however I did the first at the start of the year so it was dark until Newcastle. Plus it means having to get up at around 5am to drive to Middlesbrough. I've done the two seperate journeys (Newcastle - Carlisle and Newcastle - Middlesbrough) so many times now it flies by.

Is that every station west of Woking?

Indeed, it's overtaken by 1W53 0630 London Waterloo - Weymouth between Woking and Basingstoke though.

The evening return equivalent; 2W80 2110 Weymouth - London Waterloo, is somewhat faster, as it does not call at Holton Heath, Beaulieu Road, Redbridge, Millbrook, St Denys or Swaythling, although it does call at West Byfleet and Wimbledon, giving a total of 39 stops and taking 3h52, arriving into Waterloo at 0102.
