Longest Scotrail formation? (excluding Sleeper and 380s)

what I wonder wil happen if electrification isnt done and the 156s are life expired, do the platform work? Or a new build DMU?

Given that the 156s still have 15 years of life left, I doubt anybody's panicking just yet

You do get rare formations up here. I worked a Bathgate a few years ago it was a 170+156 tied up. A rare combination up here i can tell you. Also had a 158+156 on a stopper central the other day and that is quite rare now too.

3x158s were booked jobs for us up until the december diagram changes. Mainly early morning fife circles and bathgate trains.


There was also a 6car 158 that stayed togehter the whole day as there was nowhere to put the sets. They went from fife to Newcraighall all day eventually running off to the shed about 2030 after terminating at Haymarket from Newcraighall. This service is now diagramed for a 5car 1x170 + 1x 158

Id rather have a sprinter on a fife circle than a 170 anyday. Atleast you know with the sprinters that you will make it round ok

Once ive had a failure with a 156 tpws IIRC. Not bad in 7 years or so. Nothings perfect they just seem to be better than our other traction

170+158s were common on fife services for a while, not so much these days. 170+156 ive never seen though!

out of interest, does anyone else think that a 170's exhaust note sounds a bit like a single-propeller plane when its pulling away from a station? (when stood at the station)

I'm sure I saw an 8 car 15X combinaton drawing into Dunblane station - probably late 1997. From memory the platform and station area was full of school children - so guessing it was a special for a day out.

(The Highland Chieftan barely squeezes onto the Up platform at Dunblane, the down platform is a bit shorter.)

I also remember a being on a 170 tied up to a 150 a good few years ago now Maybe 7 years ago on a dunblane service. Theres a diagramed job for a 5car that runs round fife all day now and runs off to the shed from Newcraighall about 2030 that used to be 3x158s.

Yes the 170 can sound like a plane taking off

i remember the 150-170 combo, lived in fife in them days and it often formed the last train 6f the nite which was a dundee. The old 150s were good. With a decent refurb we could have kept them but have to admit, the air conditioned luxury of a turbo is nice.

Yes, summer diagrams, with 2 cars to Oban and 4 cars to Fort William, splitting/joining at Crianlarich

I last remember seeing that combo in 2004 at Leuchars . And 156at Leuchars aswell.

There was 156s at leuchars and dundee during the snow disruption.
