The Fort William portion of the down Caledonian Sleeper currently has 63 minutes in Edinburgh.Which journey currently has the longest amount of scheduled standing time at an intermediate station?
The down Night Riviera had 96 minutes scheduled at Exeter St Davids this morning. In practice it arrived 17 minutes early so had a dwell of 113 minutes. The Fort William portion of the down Caledonian Sleeper currently has 63 minutes in Edinburgh.
Yes it would be interesting to have a separate "non sleeper" total. The down Night Riviera had 96 minutes scheduled at Exeter St Davids this morning. In practice it arrived 17 minutes early so had a dwell of 113 minutes.
Maybe sleepers should be left out of this question though.
Derby sees some long dwells. The 0809 Birmingham New Street to Nottingham has a 22 minute dwell there (0850-0912) - https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C48282/2024-06-03/detailed#allox_id=1
2054 Nottingham to Matlock has 17 minutes at Derby (2120 to 2137)The sleeper at Exeter doesn't change direction so maybe look for longest dwell time without reversal!
But it does sometimes, which in conjunction with the extra time taken to divert via the Mule is part of the reason for the long dwell.I notice a lot of these quoted dwell times may involve a reversal of the train.

That was pre covid - no longer happens. When it did, it not only waited at Soton, but again at Brockenhurst, both for fasts to overtake.I don’t know if it still exists but there used to be a 24 or 26 minute wait at Southampton for a London to Poole service I think. 2 or 3 services overtaking I assume?
Back when that service was part of the normal timetable, it was booked for about 20 mins at Southampton, but there was another longer dwell at Brockenhurst, and that one was nearer half an hour. Taken together it meant if you were at Waterloo, and heading for Poole, you’d be very badly delayed if you decided to catch the train that actually had Poole as its final destination…I don’t know if it still exists but there used to be a 24 or 26 minute wait at Southampton for a London to Poole service I think. 2 or 3 services overtaking I assume?
Why does it not depart Leeds later to avoid the long dwell at York. Is their no later path? For an Intercity type journey, the 05:43 Leeds to Edinburgh sits at York from 06:04½ until 06:27 - 22½ minutes, which is 1 minute longer than the journey time from Leeds to York! It is possible to depart Leeds 9 minutes later on a TPE and officially connect into this train at York.
I think it is left over from a change where it divided at York to form a train that isn't running at the moment. Something like the 0625 to Reading via Doncaster rings a bell. I think that train used to start at Leeds but was extended to start at York and run via Doncaster as part of that change. Why does it not depart Leeds later to avoid the long dwell at York. The old timetable had 4tph from Man Vic to Leeds, ordered something like:Not in the same league as some of the previous entries but ...
... the 1050 Liverpool to Newcastle has a 15 minute wait at Manchester Victoria which seems a long time for an important long distance train to be blocking up a busy through platform
Does anybody know why it is timed like this?
