How about Croxley Green branch?
Service suspended in March 1996 in expectation of engineering work to adapt line but not ‘closed ‘ until September 2003. Presumably ‘possessed’ in the interim?

The Sussex Route sees a fair amount of closures of the likes of Three Bridges-Brighton, South Croydon Jn-Uckfield, Horsham-Barnham and so on. However, as has been correctly pointed out above, often the worksites and possessions are in much smaller areas, distributed as efficiently as possible so that they are grouped together by line-of-route. Often there can be a portion of the route accessible (particularly at one end) for shunting manoeuvres or suchlike, but due to the lack of infrastructure which is able to be used for an efficient passenger service, closing the route to passengers can be a more effective option to use.

Sometimes the lack of ground frames and crossovers in some areas (generally as a result of over-rationalisation) does not help matters, but even if they are there, often you would be terminating trains at unstaffed or part-time staffed stations with poor passenger access, poor bus access and so on. Running buses between major stations is often the most sensible way of doing it, even if it extends journey times. I'm no replacement bus fan myself, but I know why some places are chosen above others (or should be)!

There was a slight issue that about 200 yards of track was nicked (deservedly) , to patch up the slow lines after the Watford collision in 1996 , as there was a question about running some diesel units to the Football Halt in 1997 , - the track was correctly borrowed for an emergency job , but as the line was under a permanant block pro-tem , they never told the controlling SB. Not that it really mattered......

The Settle-Carlisle emergency blockade a few years back must be up there, all the freight diverted via the ECML at short notice, some of it stayed that way.

October and February next year the Brighton mainline tunnels will be worked on, and plumtpon Lewes line will be shut so that's three bridges to Brighton, including keymer junction to Lewes not as far as many peoples suggestions I guess.
Sometimes the angmering to Brighton line is shut too that's quite a way, about 25 miles
