In the days when Virgin dragged in the winter it was possible to have the following.

Preston-Bolton-Salford Cres-Man Vic-Miles Platting-Denton-Stockport-Crewe.

And the Liverpool version.
Lime St-Newton Le Willows-Ordsall Lane Junct-then as above from Man Vic.

Considerably more miles than a drag via Piccadilly.

I did a Liverpool Lime Street to Birmingham New Street service (pre Virgin) via the Frodsham Curve (Double Track) & traversed the Chester Triangle & Beeston to Crewe!

Also, in pre Virgin days, Liverpool Lime Street to Birmingham New Street via Earlestown, Manchester Piccadilly, Stockport, Macclesfield, Stoke-on-Trent & Stafford, which included the 47/8 going bang near Stone & a pair of weather worn 20s dragging to Stafford for 47501 forwards!

FGW Didcot to Paddington via Oxford, Banbury and Joint Line to Paddington Christmas/New Year 2010/11
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Not an absolute WHOPPER of a diversion, but I've been on a train from Bridgend to Cardiff, which normally takes about twenty minutes, via the Vale of Glamorgan Line, making a call at Llantwit Major, Rhoose and Barry, taking nearly an hour!!
Would have been a Manchester to West Wales train. When this Engineering Diversion occurs on a Saturday, the regular Vale service is cancelled and this takes up the stops in lieu.

Not on the BR network but on a BR organised train. Back in 1977 the Liverpool division of BR organised 4 football specials from Lime Street to Roma Termini for the European Cup final. The 4 trains in this country combined into 2 on the continent. Our route should have been via France and Switzerland but because of a strike in France we were diverted. The route taken was Folkestone Harbour - Ostend - Brussels - Cologne - Basle and the Simplon tunnel, rejoining the planned route at Milan. A wonderful trip and they won the match! Can you imagine such enterprise being shown today?

Not a diversion in Britain, but I have been delayed by 6 hours on the EuroNight Jan Kiepura train from Warsaw to Amsterdam as we were diverted via Lodz between Warsaw and Poznan. I believe the reason for the diversion was due to electrical supply problems/power lines coming down (something like that anyway). Because the driver didn't sign the route, I think we could only travel at 40kmph (25mph) along the diverted stretch, hence the huge delay. It was strange to see local EMUs overtaking our international train on adjacent lines.

when fnw ran the 01.50 holyhead to birmingham service the line was closed between chester & crewe so we were diverted via warrington & manchester piccadilly taking just under 80 minutes & being teminated at wolverhampton.

Clapham junction to Staines (reading train) went via Wimbledon and Kingston to twickenham, then it continued its journey. Didn't stop on the Kingston loop.

Was that when 37/4s worked the North Wales Coast?

As I remember, they started working the coast regularly in 1993, and lasted until 1999, although the odd one or two were seen before.

I've seen photos on the internet of Pendolinos being dragged along the Settle-Carlisle Line, so they'd have gone Preston - Lancaster - Carnforth - Giggleswick - Settle - Ribblehead - Kirkby Stephen - Carlisle.

A photo of 57305 and 390053 crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct in the snow just made me day.
They ran Preston-Blackburn-Clitheroe-Hellifield-S&C.
Last year, I travelled Pre to Edb as normal. Then 1052 Edb-Crs-Glc-Kilmarnock-Car-Settle-Blackburn-Pre-Eus(arr 1914)

AFAIK, Pendolinos or Voyagers don't get diverted from Carnforth to Hellifield via Giggleswick.

What has been the longest planned or emergency diversion on the British Rail network?

Posted 21st January elsewhere on the site

"Recall the nightmare of BR days when on an early midsummer morning taking an Inter-City - Edinburgh/Glasgow - Penzance when they used to couple the 2 sections of the train at Carstairs and the West Coast line was used.

Just south of Lancaster - a delay - more than 2 hours then a reversal back through Carnforth to Hellifield - then down to Clitheroe-Blackburn-Preston. At Preston a further delay more than 2 hours. Then to Birmingham New Street where we were told to get off the train and cross over to another service to Bristol Temple Meads. The tickes were checked and when we arrived at Bristol there was an announcement for passengers to Penzance to make themselves known. There were two of us! We were put on a train to Reading and told to pick up the sleeper to Penzance there! Fortunately at Reading we were expected - put into a first class sleeper and nothing more said. Arrived home more than 12 hours late. Stares silence and disbelief from the lady - remember no mobiles/internet in those days.

Would that happen in these days? Certainly not. we'd be dumped at New Street and told to wait for the first XC service to Penzance in the morning - even if we'd have been allowed to divert Carnforth-Blackburn. "

Another Classic Paddington-Penzance with a diversion during BR days. The overnight 23:55 heading westwards. Fell asleep, woke up, we were in Oxford waiting to go forward. Slight panic on my behalf, am I on the right train. Next we were in Worcester 03:00 am +, now total panic! find a guard - yes this is the Penzance train - detour due to an accident. Then down to Hereford - Maindee North - Maindee East to the Severn Tunnel - Bristol TM and then normal route home. (reckon this was midsummer mid 70's) had never done Didcot- Hereford before and never knowingly since - but it's filled in on my track map.

Longest on a short journey but not techically a diversion - At Uni in Bristol - early days (especially on Sundays at Bristol Parkway) arranged to go Bristol TM to Parkway return Sunday evening to meet a fellow student for a pint or two and take the last service back to Bristol TM! Driver forgot to stop at Parkway - taken to the old Gloucester Station, before the changes to the single station, and told to stay on the train and go to Cheltenham. The train we picked up was to drop us at Bristol Parkway, for a connection to South Wales. It was the last train to call at Parkway to go onwards to Temple Meads and the train I was due to return home on. So I just stayed on the train back to TM. Cost of the journey Bristol TM/Cheltenham return? Something like 32p back in the day. My friend said he saw the train speed through Parkway with utter disbelief.

Ah right, I knew it went some route!

Would it not be easier to go along the Cumbrian Coast Line?

Fair play. Wasn't sure whether a reversal would be required via Clitheroe and Hellifield though.
Diversions only need to reverse at Preston, no reversals needed en-route to Carlisle.
The Super Voyagers and Northern Dalesrail services are the only passenger trains which run over the normally freight only Clitheroe to Hellifield line.

I did a pretty weird one, would have been 1998 and an XC HST. There was a direct NE-SE train, Leeds around lunchtime, destination Poole I think. We were as normal to Coventry, then straight down the WC, turned off at Harlesden (willesden no 7 jun), Acton Wells, Poplar Jun, then GWML to Reading. Believe this was before HSTs worked the Holyheads (but happy to be corrected) so rare places for a HST I think.

I also once did an overnight transpennine Manchester-Leeds (around 1998) that went from Piccadilly p14 through Salford then Bradford Interchange.

With the Northern services only running on summer Sundays, although local groups are pressuring for this to be reopened throughout the year.

The longest diversion I have ever done was the Settle & Carlisle route, with trains diverted off the WCML between Preston and Carlisle. The route being Preston-Bamber Bridge-Blackburn-Helifield-Ribblehead-Carlisle. I only did it the once, back in 2000 with an XC 47/8 Stockport to Carlisle via Entwistle and the S&C on a diverted 1S54 Bournemouth - Glasgow Central and the same XC 47/8 back (844 I think?) on a West Coast mk3 set Carlisle to Preston.
A journey time of about 2hrs and a bit!

I've never done it, but I believe the G&SW route is a rather long drag as well!

Longest diversion I have been on was in May 1991, when the Newcastle-Penzance HST which I boarded at Birmingham, was diverted from Bristol to Exeter via Bath, Castle Cary, Yeovil and Honiton due to a derailment at Taunton. Added about 3 hours to usual journey time, with about an hour of that giving way to other trains on the single line sections.

I also did Birmingham to Exeter in March 2002 on a diverted York-Plymouth train via Solihull, Banbury, Oxford, Didcot West Jn and Swindon, re-joining the usual route at Bristol Parkway.

Happy days

In the past, was it known for South Wales services to be diverted from Didcot via Oxford, Worcester & Hereford to Newport?

I seem to remember travelling back on a Virgin Voyager from Truro/Plymouth? to Bristol en route from Falmouth to Newport back in Easter 2005, when instead of going via Weston Super Mare, we went via Westbury to Bristol TM.

This is a diversion which takes place quite often, at least one period a year anyway. My parents did Birmingham-Plymouth and back in April 2009 and were diverted via Bath and Westbury both ways. Adds about 45 mins to an hour to the journey.

So in the UK can drivers drive routes they don't sign if they drive slowly?

Not in this Country, but due to a landslide on the high speed line in 2010, our Chonqqing to Chengdu train was diverted via the 'classic' line. That must be a canny stint!
