Long marston open weekend

[RUTH]

Hello there, just to update you all regarding Long Marston Open Weekend. We are opening the gates again this year 17th and 18th September. We are going to use much more of the site for displays to enable the keen photographers to get better shots of some of the stock here.

There will be the normal train rides, including one which circuits the complete site (not done for many years). We will be running both steam loco and our DMU on these trips.

Europhoenix will be unveiling their latest re-liveried electrics and Glenn and his team will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

There will be an opportunity to drive one of our rail road remote control machines and we have the brand new UCA Trac JCB Shunter here on demonstration (I am the UK agent for UCA).

The event is all for charity (Railway Children), as my husband Colin has pledged to raise a great deal of money for them this year.

Hi there, the tickets are £15 each and include the train token for the tours. You can download the form at www.motorail.co.uk or, send an SAE with cheque and a note of how many tickets and for what day to:

We are asking people to buy tickets in advance, this is so that we can cater properly for the amount of visitors coming (toilets, parking, food etc). We are also only running transport from stations on a pre-booked basis and the collections and drop offs are limited. Additionally, we are running an Early Bird ticket for the Saturday which requires pre-booking.

HOWEVER, that all said, if you are on holiday or working away then of course I will sell you a ticket on the day, any extra money to the Railway Children will not be turned down.

I think it was to do with some TV adverts in the 70's 80's though i cant find one with the class 47.

What is the best way of getting to the site by public transport? Are there local buses from Stratford-upon-Avon,Evesham or any other rail-heads or is there to be a "special" bus service laid on from somewhere as I believe there was a few years ago?

It ran with Virgin XC from around 2002 until the end of loco haulage. It was repainted after being sponsored by BTP to raise awareness of rail safety.

The 37 was specially repainted for an advert in the mid 80s where a 'speeding' HST is pulled over.

I went along today. Not a bad day out, though even more low key than last year. The site tour this year was by DMU rather than bus which was an improvement on last year. It was a slightly surreal experience riding round the depot at 5mph in a crumbling class 117 staffed entirely by uniformed soldiers.
There was foot access to a larger area of the site this year which was good but there are fewer locomotives on site now. The two newly painted Europhoenix 87s looked smart and both have been reunited with their former names. Picture here:

We raised nearly £12,000 so we are absolutely delighted! Its a massive thank you to you and the other enthusiasts who made this a very enjoyable and successful weekend.

Keep an eye on our website as the new one will go live in a month or so, we are starting something called 'Friends of Long Marston' it might be of interest to you. You can also keep up to date with what is happening regarding our planned heritage centre.
