Have just tried looking for fare prices for Long Buckby or Northampton to Milton Keynes central leaving Saturday the 10th December and returning the day after and am being shown a price of £10.40 for an Anytime Single on each day and with no option to get a off peak single or return, this was on the London Midland website. I then looked on the National Rail website and got the same results, but now with the option of a £71 return. I tried changing the dates to a weekend next month just to compare and there is no difference. Any help it seems rather unusual?

The only Returns are Day Returns on these two flows. Of course, there are other tickets available such as Season tickets, and Rover tickets (the £71 ticket is not a return!) but they wouldn't be suitable for you unless you are making other journeys too.

You could get an Off Peak Return from Rugby to MKC for £16.30 and start/finish "short" at Long Buckby or Northampton.

The £71 isn't actually a return fare - it's an East Midlands flexi rover allowing 3 days travel. It's odd that it should show up though - but the absence of off peak tickets isn't that uncommon.

The £71 pound fare is a 3 in 7 east midlands flexi rover.

(on the nres site click the 'return' tab, select a train and at the bottom the 'tickets' section shows the fare type)

The £71 ticket is the 3 in 7 East Midlands Rover.

There are no return tickets because there are only day returns on this route, presumably due to the short distance involved.

There is a £17.40 off peak ticket for the same journey, although I'm not sure if starting short is permitted, perhaps someone with Avantix access can check?
