Hello guys -

I am travelling in London tomorrow and I want to know the best way to get from Hayes & Harlington Station to Custom House on the DLR and return.


If some ticketing maestros could help me out it would be awesome!

No I don't hold a railcard, although might get one if I keep doing this london travelling.

The cheapest way will be to get an oystercard. There's a £5 deposit which you get back if you surrender the card, but the fares, especially off-peak, are significantly cheaper than paying cash. If you have a railcard you can get this attached to the oystercard (unless it's a faimly and friends or network card).

As to the journey, you have a couple of sensible options:

1) Hayes & Harlington - Ealing Broadway - Bank - Shadwell/Limehouse - Custom House
2) Hayes & Harlington - Paddington - Tower Hill/Tower Gateway - Custom House

Thanks, that helps a bit - I just very rarely travel to london or in london so I'm confused about the tube, the bus, the dlr and all this!

And further to Mike's point may I suggest his Oyster website, as noted in his signature. I'm not an Oyster user myself (most of my London journeys are through only) but it has given me some good insight into the tricks with them.

Also, upon the opening of the route (which obviously won't be tomorrow), you could use the Hammersmith & City from Paddington to West Ham, and the DLR from there. Until then though, you're probably better off going to Tower Gateway to avoid Bank (and needing to change three times). What Mike missed though is the possibility of the District Line from Ealing Broadway to either Monument (for Bank) or Tower Hill (for Tower Gateway).

So I did. However, now you've mentioned it, I think I'd prefer to stay on the FGW train to Paddington and use either direction of the circle line* rather than the subset of District line services that come from Ealing.

* But not the ones that only go to Edgware Road, obviously.

Probably too late now, but the quickest journey is likely to be H&H to Paddington, Bakerloo to Marylebone, Jubilee to Canning Town, thence DLR.
