Hi
if this needs moving then please feel free to move this post.

me and my friend are going up to london at some point and we need to use mainline to get to some of the places where we are going as the stations are between tube stations. Can we use the day travelcards, (obviously on the right zones) on mainline stations. i am aware that it is useable around the clapham junction area as i asked and the guy on the ticket office said as long as it is in london underground zones but i want to make sure on here as well.

also if the above is correct and there are stations which are not on the london underground map can we still pass through them, as we wont get off there.
any advice will be appreciated. :D
thanks

Travelcard is valid (within the appropriate zones) on most train services within London - whether those services are operated by 'London Overground' or one of the train operating companies.

There are one or two exceptions - e.g. Heathrow is not part of Travelcard if you travel via Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect.

Travelcard is also valid on London Buses (i.e. pretty much any red bus, but not the 'sightseeing tour' buses), Docklands Light Railway and Croydon Tramlink.

This page on TfL website may help.

One thing you should be aware of though, if you're getting a one day travelcard from a station outside London, it is only valid for one return journey between your origin station and the boundary of London. You can't go home part way through the day then go back in to London with it.

A Day Travelcard is valid on all National Rail services within relevant zones. Not valid on Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect between Hayes and Harlington and the airport.

You can check which zone your station falls in on here.

To clarify this, the Travelcard is valid for unlimited travel within the Zones, plus one trip in each direction from your origin station to the edge of the Zones.

if the station is not on the map but the mainline train passes through one thats not on the map (as long as it is in london) then would that still be ok, apart from heathrow express as said above?

Can you link to your 'map'? Alternatively use this one as that includes all valid rail services. The normal all zones travelcard is valid within zones 1-6, but not 7-9 or the odd Oyster bits outside. Note also that it is not valid on SE HS between St Pancras Intl and Stratford Intl.

This would be much easier if you named the stations you wish to travel to and the order in which you wish to visit each station.

Stopping off at an out-of-zone intermediate station that's on a permitted route is allowed, unless the specific ticket type does not allow Break of Journey. By knowing the stations involved, we could look this up for you.

What you can't do, however, is double back on yourself on the section of track that's outside the London zones.

hi
sorry i havent put a station in, this is because me and my friend are trying to see how many we can pass through in a day and we are not sure what order yet.

is the map in the link showing all of the stations that we can use travelcards on? or just connections?

That map (zones 1-6) is all stations you can use it to/from as many times as you like. Plus if you get an outboundary one you can use it to get into London from your origin station and back again once. :)

Ok so with a day travelcard 1-6 you can use any mainline within 1-6, but if you buy a zones 1-9 travelcard then can we use mainline within those areas so for example amersham (buying the travelcard inside London so Stratford or is it only 1-6 and not including 7 onwards even though you buy a zone 1-9?

A Zones 1-9 Travelcard is valid anywhere within Zones 1-9. The Travelcard if bought at a London Underground station will say "123456789" whereas if bought from a National Rail station will say "London Zones 1-6" but also "Route AAA 7-9" to show the additional validity.

So I can use it on all mainline trains on the map if I buy it inside London and zone 1-9?

Just a quick thing, are travel cards (london underground ones) valid on busses as well or do we need a seperate ticket?

Yes - all 'London Buses' services (i.e. red buses) in any zone (buses don't have zones in London any more) or even beyond, e.g. you can use Travelcard on 'London Buses' buses (not usually on other operators' buses though) out to - for example - Dartford / Bluewater in the east, Slough in the west - although these areas are outside Travelcard zone 6 on trains.

Travelcard is valid on the 'heritage routemaster' operations on services 9 and 15, but not on 'sightseeing tour' type buses.

It's also valid on Docklands Light Railway (for that you do have to be within the zones on your travelcard) and the Croydon tram (I'm not 100% certain how zones work on that.)

Also note that places like Watford Junction are outside zones 1-9.
