Ouyt of interest, was the ballot for tickets hugely over-subscribed or not? I was interested in doing the steam but not at £150. (I would have been happy to pay around £50-75 for it though.)

Only just. They are still sorting out the double requests, e.g. husband and wife applying separately for two tickets.

i was planning to see it from kings cross and the battery locos - anyone know what platforms/lines

Don't know if it's already been mentioned, but tomorrow (Wednesday 9th) Oliver Green of the LT Museum is giving a Gresham College lecture on the history of the Underground. 1pm at the Museum of London, free entry, no need to pre-book, but get there early as this is likely to be popular.

If you're worried about a particular station being too busy then you can always travel to it on a preceding service train, get off, wait a few minutes and bob's your uncle but you can always travel to one of the quieter non-interchange stations like Euston Square.

If anyone's interested Met No1 is pulling an ECS along the District during normal service hours tonight - leaves Ealing Common at 22:04, Turnham Green 22:15, Hammersmith 22:21 and West Kensington at 22:24 before heading into Lillie Bridge.

I'm pretty sure they all run at least between Baker Street and Moorgate along the top of the circle - passing through Great Portland Street, Euston Square, Kings Cross/St Pancras, Farringdon and Barbican on the way.

Some are shuttles, running between Edgware Road/Baker St and Moorgate, while others are to and from the depot at Lillie Bridge so involve a longer journey using the west side of the Circle to/from Kensington Olympia/Earls Court.

That was suggested by someone when the plans were presumably being worked up but there's been no suggestion since (officially or otherwise) that LU don't want people to see these trains, indeed Peter Hendy was on the radio recently suggesting people should go down and have a look, but obviously stations will act if necessary to prevent overcrowding and obviously flash/tripods are banned.

That said, given the service frequency even on a sunday night there's a good chance you could get bowled anyway if you use the other platform.

Hi all, I'm sure everyone would appreciate to know that today, the Google logo is a London Underground theme.

This I believe is because of the underground being 150 years old.

Good of Google to do so (I just found out and was going to say as much but I three hours late!) - it publicises this massive anniversary for those who don't know about it. It's probably the best - and most imaginative - design they've done since Pac-Man.

I just noticed, why is there a branch off the Piccadilly line on the google map which doesn't exist?

To form the shape of the 'G' - it's not a completely accurate map. The lower case 'g' isn't there on the real map either!

It isn't completely enclosed. The line was built with steam in mind because that is what was first used. There is access to the surface here and there - in fact some parts are completely in the open. The engine itself, being designed for Underground use, also has apparatus designed to stop steam escaping into the tunnels.

More railway has been built over since they last ran though! I don't believe that Met 1 has any capture/condensing equipment fitted either.

Just so long as the safety valve does not blow whilst under a girder again they should be fine!

Met No1 isn't currently fitted with condensing gear, which the videos do a rather good job of confirming

they've carried out extensive live-steam testing. They've already thought this through. There is of course just the one loco, whereas "back in the day" there was an intensive steam service.

Surprised you noticed this over the whole new "branch" of the victoria making the second 'g'!
