Can't wait to see Steam on the Met again. I remember the great sense of occasion it used to make until Ken banned back in around 2002?

I've never seen Ken mentioned before - everything i've heard suggests it fell foul of the PPP, which the Mayor campaigned against.

Steam on the Met was stopped before Ken (through TfL took over from LRT). I think it happened when PPP Shadow Running was put in place.

It's not just a special train but a unique opportunity - as far as im aware this will be the first (and perhaps last) steam hauled passenger service on the 'Inner Circle' for over a century. A once-in-a-lifetime chance to travel in a Metropolitan Railway wooden bodied compartment carriage behind a Metropolitan steam loco under the streets of London on the first Underground railway in the world.

There are plenty of worse ways to spend £150 IMO!

Hi all, my first post here. I would agree there are plenty of worse ways to spend £150, it is probably a lifetime opportunity for most enthusiasts, and yes, I have paid my £150 after winning a place in the ballot.

Having undergone my training, I hope to see some of you on the day. I know a number of the stewards selected and am pleased that thought that has been given as to who will be working the train, chosen stewards have a genuine interest in the railway and heritage events so I hope we can all enjoy the day together.

Ouyt of interest, was the ballot for tickets hugely over-subscribed or not? I was interested in doing the steam but not at £150. (I would have been happy to pay around £50-75 for it though.)

A good question, which I may find the answer for at the volunteers meet next week. What I can say is both my wife and I applied separately for two tickets each to increase our chances and both were successful; we had to cancel one of them.

A steam train built more than 100 years ago took to London's Underground system at the weekend.

Transport for London is operating a service on 13 January to commemorate 150 years since the first London Tube journey.

A test run took place in the early hours of Sunday morning in preparation for the 300 passengers who applied for tickets through a ballot.

Can I stand on the platform even if I dont have a ticket?

I believe I read some where maybe dave underground that the stations will be closed when the train goes through to prevent overcrowding.

I remember reading that comment a while back but an article in the latest Steam Railway says platforms will remain open, though the BTP will be on hand and they will be closed for safety reasons if they become too overcrowded - a ticket will be needed to get through the barriers however.

Remember that journeys using Oyster are timed so anyone wanting to hang about to watch these are probably better off buying a paper travelcard to avoid paying a penalty fare.

If you exceed the maximum journey time then my impression was that you'd be charged a maximum fare (£7.80) which is very much different from a penalty fare.

No because there are ticket barriers at almost every station so you'd need to at least touch in to go on the platform

I doubt they will close the entire section while they run the train goes by so I'd imagine you'll be able to get to the platform

As his responsability doesn't include anything running on rails, I assume his involvment in this event comes from being something of an enthusiast himself.

Perhaps, but i believe it's being based at Lillie Bridge depot for these runs which is just round the corner from Olympia, so it may spend the afternoon there. I think there was a plan for her to go on display at Baker Street later in the year, but im not sure that's been confirmed yet.
