London trip

Hello,

I'm arriving at Southend airport tomorrow, and will be in London for about 48 hours. I've done some looking online, but can't really work out exactly what I need.
I will be travelling around central London by Oyster card, and thence out to Egham for a while to see a friend. Is there a way I can make either the journey from Southend to London or from London to Egham cheaper by perhaps using my Oyster card for part of the journey?

Otherwise I think it's in the region of £25 for just the mainline train tickets.

Southend Airport - Egham Off Peak Return is £35.20. Valid on any trains after 0930, and you are free to break your journey at any point en-route. It includes the cross-London trip on the Tube, but this must be between appropriate stations, e.g. Liverpool St to Waterloo/Victoria/London Bridge. (Technically you may leave in-between these stations, but you might have problems with staff not knowing this when you try and exit. If you do so you can't continue from there and must make your own way to the mainline station).

For travel around central London you might be able to save a little by walking (check a real map rather than the Tube map!) or using buses (£1.45 single, capped at £4.40 for the day).

If you have a Railcard - e.g. the Network Railcard - the fare is reduced to £23.95.

I can't see a cheaper way of doing this - shorter jouneys tend to have only one-day tickets available which means you have to buy two singles. That said I'm not familiar with the route, and there may be a cheaper ticket available.

Thank you both for replying.

£35 seems absolutely extortion for such a short journey. When converted to Euro that is nearly the same price as the longest possible return journey within the Netherlands (Maastricht - Alkmaar rtn for example).
Though actually I do not need a return as from central London I will be travelling north but I have that transport arranged. I am setting off in about an hour for the airport. I will be on the 11.30ish train from Southend, and then I hope to be on the 13.20 from Waterloo to Egham. I'm not sure if this helps.
