I am Travelling to York from London on a Tuesday and returning the following Thursday. Can anyone tell me if seat reservations are essential? There are 3 of us travelling but would prefer not to be tied to certain trains. But clearly if there is a risk of us getting split up or having to standing all the way then Reservations it will be.

Assuming you are using NXEC services, if you book through the NXEC you will be charged £2.50 each in each direction for seat reservations. However, as far as I am aware, if you book via a trainline based website, you will not be charged for the seat reservations. Try a site such as www.tpexpress.co.uk to avoid the booking charges.

Sorry but I think I worded the question wrong. What I was trying to get at is how busy are the services from Kingscross to York after 11:00 ??? and again returning from york say after 16:00. Thanks for you replies so far. :D
