London to Winsford - am I missing something?

My wife and I need to go up to Winsford at some point over the next few weeks, so I'm just looking at which weekend might be most suitable.
It's two single tickets with no discounts (I'm picking up a car, so driving back) and I'm looking at June 19th.

East Coast gives:
London - Winsford, departing Euston 12:10, changing at Crewe: £62 for two adults
London - Crewe, departing Euston 12:10: £22 for two adults

Both fares are Advance singles...

But the single from Crewe to Winsford (a nine-minute journey) cost £5.80 for two adults.

So how come it costs an extra £34.20 simply for the privilege of carrying one ticket rather than two?

There are generally several 'tiers' of prices for advance tickets, presumably the 'Virgin only' ticket to Crewe is a lower priced tier than the 'Virgin and connections' ticket to Winsford.

and how many pay up the highest cost,without being in the know like us.Dont forget Winsford station is over a mile out of the town
