London to Southend

Hi, i'm travelling from London in a few weeks time but i'm wanting to use both Southend Victoria and Southend central station but notice their run by 2 different train companies. Does anyone know of any tickets that cover you on both?

Unfortunately there is no longer a day ticket which allows you to use both lines (there used to be)

The only option is to buy two single tickets.

I've had a little play around with BR Fares and the only fare from London Terminals to Southend Stations seems to be a 7DS (weekly) a workaround may be to issue the ticket from e.g. Finsbury Park as this gives a full rake of available fares.

A local expert will be along shortly to offer a more detailed reply.

If you one day you might have a Day Travelcard (Zones 1-6 is £12), you can get a Boundary Zone 6 to Southend Stations Off-Peak Day Return for £12.80.

Alternatively, tickets from Romford to Southend Stations are still available and would appear to be valid via both Upminster and Shenfield. There is even a Super Off-Peak Day Return for this option at £10.50, valid to depart from 1200 onwards.

Sadly not. It will be available from the ticket office at your origin though, and from a limited selection of machines, including some Southern and London Overground ones.

This is interesting. It is possible to get a boundary zone ticket added onto a Travelcard from and issued outside zones 1-6, e.g. from St Albans City?
Also, would it be necessary to travel on trains that stop at the boundary station or could a Liverpool St first stop Shenfield be used despite zone 6 ending at Harold Wood?

Boundary zones tickets are unique in that you don't have to stop at the boundary.

There're various possibilities like that, considering that Liverpool Street to Fenchurch Street plus Southend Victoria to Southend Central are both valid walking interchanges.

"London" is a big place. And you did not state if you need to travel before 9:30.

Depending where you live, you can buy (for example) an off-peak day return to Southend Stations from East Croydon at £22.90; from Seven Sisters at £18.80; from Stratford at as little as £13.

Best thing is to check stations near you; most London stations will be £22.90 (off-peak day return) but the price drops the further east you go. £13 from Upminster for an Anytime day return as one example. You can always start short or buy a second ticket to get you to a station that offers the right fare.

I suggest trying some fares on BRFARES.COM for different stations near you.

The only ticket from London Terminals to Southend Stations is a season ticket. All other tickets from London Terminals are specifically issued to Southend Victoria or Southend Central.

For a day travelcard you'd surely just buy an outboundary travelcard from St Albans? (I'm assuming there is such a beast - haven't checked)

Day Travelcards from outside Zones 1-6 are available from stations within the Network Area (and many stations outside to).

They are issued from the relevant station to London Zones 1-6 and give one return journey from the station to the zone 6 boundary then unlimited travel on trains, tubes and bses in zones 1-6 (subject to timing restrictions on off peak versions and not allowed on HS1, Heathrow Express etc.)

It is only issued as one coupon despite it being a return ticket.

I used a ticket to Prittlewell when I went to Southend. I used it out via Fenchurch Street to Southend Central and used a walk to complete the journey, and back into Liverpool Street from Prittlewell.

I'm not exactly sure how I did it, I think it was a return from London Terminals to Prittlewell, it was valid at the time but I had to seriously argue my case on at least 3 occasions! It didn't help I made numerous breaks of journey either! A clerk at Barking seized my ticket, and was very reluctant to get it back, and I even showed NRE evidence the route was valid. I haven't known hassle like it.

Any station can sell a boundary zone ticket. There's no need to wait until you get to Liverpool Street or Fenchurch Street.

The ticket office at St Albans should be able to issue a BZ6-Southend Stations ticket at the same time as your SAC-zones 1-6 outboundary travelcard. The TVM can't though, so you'd have to buy from the office.

There's no such thing as a "bz return ticket from Romford to Southend Stations" - you can buy either a ticket from Romford to Southend Stations or a ticket from "Boundary Zone 6" to Southend Stations. If you hold a day travelcard and want to take a train that does not stop at a point where you can switch from one ticket to the other (i.e. somewhere within the zones and also on a permitted route from Romford to Southend) then you need the BZ6 ticket rather than the Romford one.
