The way I see it, there is nothing for Derby to lose by trying to obtain a reservation from the ticket office. In the eventuality of a conflict, it may give credence to their argument if they can show that the combination was ratified by a member of staff in the ticket office.

Buying the tickets online is a good idea. The barriers at St Pancras High Level aren't Oyster enabled - there is a standalone reader beyond the goods gate adjacent to the gateline which spends most of each day covered up. Paper Travelcards do work the barriers however.

I also echo soil's sentiment about hearing how you got on.

The OP has informed me that he has bought split tickets (using various loopholes - not the tickets in his OP) at the ticket office (St Pancras or somewhere else, I don't know), and obtained a reservation for the service. The clerk didn't think the tickets were valid because they were too cheap, but when told about the NRG, he said that the maps 'weren't really used anymore', but was good enough to sell the tickets having admitted that he didn't understand it properly.

He's not wrong there where EMT are concerned

You never know, the journey may be as uneventful as mine was! Today I travelled down from the East Midlands to London with 4 seperate tickets, plus a Zone 2-4 Travelcard on Oyster. After Leicester, next stop London, I handed the lot over to the TM, who barely even looked at the top ticket, marked it then moved on. That ticket was only from my origin to Melton Mowbray but I'm not going to argue if they're happy to pass that through to London!

Apparently the OP was issued with an UPFN for £77, "Reasons: 06 Other, 08 Oyster Card" while travelling using an Oyster card and three single tickets.

The guard claimed that:

* There was a sign saying EMT do not accept Oyster Cards
* Train must stop at splitting points
* He had "been doing the job for 22 years" and therefore had no need to consider the Conditions of Carriage, which the OP supplied
* the final ticket, which used a map loophole, was 'only valid between the two stations shown on the ticket' (see previous item for the reason why the guard did not need to consider the OP's print out of the Routeing Guide )

Does anyone know the most efficient means of dealing with this UPFN?

Yes. These days, I only have to make one phone call and they get cancelled.

Of the 4 reasons given I find the 3rd most illuminating. Does this person really think that the NRCoC would remain unaltered for up to 22 years ? Anyone with an ounce of common sense would dismiss such a prospect without a second thought.
