London to Leicester during WCML closure

An Off Peak Single at the weekend from London to Leicester is £57

Is it OK to purchase an London Midland Nuneaton to London (Super) Off Peak Return for substantially less, throw away the outward, and use the return portion to travel from London to Leicester?

If you already have a valid London Midland ticket or season ticket for travel on the Euston Line or the Abbey Line, your ticket will be accepted on the following train operators during the closures (not including Monday 11th and Monday 18th August); Chiltern Railways, First Capital Connect, East Midlands Trains and Cross Country (between Nuneaton and Leicester), as well as selected London Overground and London Underground routes.

No, pretty sure I've broken journeys at Leicester before.

Depends on whose on duty, however if you're travelling on a Sunday I'd be surprised if the gates were in use (although I've not been on a Sunday for some time).
I'd expect you to be fine in that direction, as it is very rare for them to care what tickets are presented on exiting, however if it was in the other direction, I'd say you'd be lucky to get through.
