Hi all,
Kinda surprised at how expensive a fare is working out as! I need to travel to Derby from London on 17 Feb, returning on 18 Feb.

I must be in Derby by 11am, and want to return around 4pm. Dont really want to hang around for too much.

Best fare I can find is £94...

If your willing to be tied to specific trains then you can do it for £41.00

09:25 St Pancras -> Derby 11:09 £15.00
16:01 Derby -> St Pancras 17:33 £26.00

Book through the EMT website (I would hold on for a bit though as someone else might be able to find something cheaper ;))

Also if you do absolutely have to be in Derby by 11:00 then you can get an earlier train but it bumps the price up to £52.00

08:55 St Pancras -> Derby 10:26 £26.00

Having just checked I've found Advance purchase fares suitable for your times at £26 to Derby on the 0855 from St Pancras, arriving 1026 and £15 on the return leaving Derby at 1634. Fares available from EMT website, otherwise £1 more if booked elsewhere.

How did you come up with £94?

I got £47

8:55 from St Pancras to Derby 10:26 for £26
17:18 from Derby to St Pancras 19:06 for £21

Although the 9:25 from London is cheaper you said you must be in Derby before 11.

Thanks. I've just realised I have been incredibly stupid. I asked for two tickets and didn't realise the fare being quoted was for both....doh!

If you're willing to trade journey time for cost you can get a much cheaper deal going via Tamworth. There's currently some £6 advances available on London Midland both ways between Euston and Tamworth, and it's then £13.30 off-peak return from Tamworth to Derby, for a total of £25.30. The connections are pretty good - the 07:47 from Euston gets to Tamworth at 09:30, then there's an 09:39 or 10:07 from there to Derby.

08.55 dep St Pancras - Derby arr 10.28 £7.00

Return the earliest train is 20.01, so you might want to buy a ''normal'' advance.
