London to Cambridge on Weekends

I'll be going from London to Cambridge on a number of Saturdays in the coming months, returning the next day (Sunday). Is my cheapest option two Super Off-Peak Singles for £34.40 total assuming I don't want to be restricted to Greater Anglia?

Apart from anything else you would be well advised to buy a Network Railcard https://www.network-railcard.co.uk/ which costs £30 and is valid for a year and will save you 34% on each ticket and has no time restrictions or minimum fare at weekends. This will more than pay for itself over 3 trips and will still be valid for a year.

You could buy a Network Railcard for £30 which would give you a 34% discount on the price of the tickets, making each single journey £11.35, £22.70 for the return.

Alternatively you can buy off peak carnet tickets - £57 for 5 single journeys (you'd need to purchase a London-Cambridge set and a Cambridge-London set) so costing £104 for 5 return journeys working out at £20.80 for a return journey. Carnet tickets are valid for 3 months from date of issue. Unfortunately you can't get a railcard discount on them.

If you do opt for carnet tickets make sure you date each one correctly - we've had numerous threads on here about people re-using these tickets, and having difficulty writing the date onto the tickets due to the quality of the ticket paper - don't get caught out!

Note that on weekdays there is a £13 minimum discounted fare with a Network Railcard (this doesn't apply at weekends or Bank Holidays).

OK, but there's also an offpeak saver, any permitted route, for £37.50 on which you can a railcard discount. It's valid for a month. So bringing the fare down to £12.40 per leg with the 1/3rd discount.

On a weekend, Any Permitted Super Off Peak day singles/returns are sold. For London-Cambridge, buying one of these on a Saturday and then another for the return on Sunday works out cheaper than an Off Peak Return.

Also, I do recommend the OP checks GA's advances from Liverpool St/Tottenham Hale - they can be very cheap if you don't mind the fixed time/longer journey time.
