Hi folks, a workmate of mine is looking to travel from Hartlepool to Camberley this saturday coming, with his partner and his daughter, returning monday. He has a family railcard, but does not wish to be tied to advance tickets.

He is torn between travelling by rail or driving, was put off initially by the £450 plus quoted online return fares until I told him to try looking for GC singles Hartlepool to Kings cross and back!

Question is, what is his best bet KGX to Camberley and back? Are there any good Travelcard/Oystercard combi deals to use each day or should he stick with an anytime return for himself , his partner and kid?

Cheers.

Just had a quick look, it takes around 5 1/2 hours each way on the train according to NRE.

Megabus fares for 3 seats are coming to a total of £72 for 3 seats return. The bus takes 6 hours going, and 5 hours 50 mins coming back.

If they don't mind travelling by bus then £72 all in sounds pretty good but this gets them to Victoria in London and not Camberley.

I forgot to mention, thats from Middlesborough so my post may not be of any use. Travel costs/time between Hartlepool/Middlesborough and Victoria/Camberley would have to be added onto above.

Super Off-Peak returns for 2 adults and 1 child with Family railcard come to £192.55

Hi gadgetman, I was surprised by the original quoted fares too but that is what the GC website he showed me was coming up with earlier today for singles both ways, one way peak!

He won't consider the coach (middle aged normal lol....) but 192 return sounds canny compared with 160 fuel by car.
Came up with around 140 for HPL -KGX returns on the day GC only, just wondered if the last leg to Camberley and back could be done cheaply?

I realise that this may not be of importance to your friend, but s/he should factor in depreciation for the car running and the opportunity cost of the driving time that could otherwise be used perhaps more productively on the train. Also, if things go arse over tits, s/he'll get a full/partial refund rather than nothing in the case of driving.
