I took a National Express coach (Victoria to Exeter) then a bus from there (the X9).
The X9 also stops at Exeter St Davids.

You may find that although they show as separate services, they are actually the same bus. Drop them an e-mail, I found them very helpful.

Buses from Plymouth & Exeter both take just under 2 hours to Bude.
It depends on what time you would arrive at Exeter ot Plymouth as both only run every 2 hours.
Plymouth to Bude 576 (Western Greyhound)
dep ( Mon - Sat) at 0850, 1050, 1250, 1450, 1550(Sat only), 1705
Exeter to Bude 599 (Western Greyhound)
dep (Mon -Sat) 1315, 1830 Sundays 1145, 1745
Exeter to Bude X9 First Buses
dep Mon -Sat 0935, 1135, 1335, 1535, 1745, 2030 (Fri & Sat Only)

I thought so. I'm not a bus expert so I can't tell you specifics but it was a Scania double-decker. There were fewer seats than on a regular service, to give you plenty of legroom, and decent high-backed seats.
There is a combined Rail-Bus Link through fare available from London to Bude via Exeter St Davids and the X9.
Off Peak Return (SVR) prices are:
Route: Taunton (ie From Paddington with FGW) £84.00
Route: Honiton (ie from Waterloo with SWT) £63.70
There are Advance Purchase fares listed in the Fares Manual as well, but I cannot check their availability online as the booking engines will not accept Bude Bus/Bude Strand despite it being on the list of destinations. Appears that you would only be able to purchase these by 'phone or at a station.
The 'station' code for Bude Bus is BUA.

It's rare that I actually ever take the seat assigned to me. If you are boarding at Paddington, just see an unreserved seat which you like and take it.
Both those seats are in bays of two.

I *think* I paid £6.40 each way last year. I'm away from my home PC at the moment, so can't check.

A pity that the former Bude station is a housing estate now.
I would suggest buying the Bus-Link ticket; Exeter St Davids (EXD) to Bude Strand (BUA) either combined with your rail fare as I suggested up thread or in addition to your train ticket if already purchased. The fare will almost certainly be cheaper than buying on the bus.
EXD-BUA Bus Day Return(BDR) £6.00
EXD-BUA Bus Period Return(BPR) £6.00
EXD-BUA Bus Day Single (BDS) £4.00.
These fares are listed in the fares manual (NFM07) so you should have no problem buying them at any National Rail Station.

Just checked, and yes, it was £6.40 single last summer. Sounds like bnm's suggestion is the way to go.
Many thanks for all your advice. The train to exeter was very busy with very few non-reserved seats available. On the bus it was very busy as well because it was a single decker and I had to stand until Oakhampton (I did sit on the floor for a bit)!!
