I've just renewed my annual season ticket Wargrave-Paddington with one of those new "1st class on Eastbound trains only" tickets.

My previous standard class tickets always had "not Reading" in the route section, but now I have "1steastboundonly" in the route section, with no mention of Reading.

Does this mean I can now travel via Reading? It would be a whole lot quicker off peak.

I doubt it as you'd have to travel west from Twyford to go via Reading. Your ticket allows you to travel from Wargrave to London on direct through or connecting trains from Twyford (i.e. eastbound)

The routing from Twyford to London has always had a "Reading" option though, albeit at a price premium. As I've paid a fair amount more than the STD fare for this, I was wondering if as well as the 1ST option to London the fare includes the Reading route.

The permitted routes for any ticket purchased under the National Rail Conditions of Carriage, are defined within the National Routeing Guide.

The route via Reading to Paddington is not permitted within the National Routeing Guide due to the fact you would be "doubling back" between Twyford and Reading, something forbidden within the NRG (unless an easment specifically allows this). The following is stated with regard to routes not listed within the NRG but for which a higher route specific fare does exist:

You may only use all the permitted routes if the fare is unrouted or the route is described as "any permitted". An "any permitted" ticket cannot be used for travel on a route not listed in the Routeing Guide for which a higher priced route specific fare exists. It can be used on any route not listed in the Routeing Guide for which a lower priced route specific fare exists.

The only routes listed within the guide for the price of the ticket you have purchased are the routes from the Slough Routeing Point to the London Routeing Point (Wargrave does have Reading as an associated routeing point but this cannot be used as it fails the fares check rule). The routes from the Slough Routeing Point to the London Routeing Point are only those that go via Ealing Broadway.

Your fare is still lower than the standard 'route Reading' option
