London Terminals Question

Sorry if this has been previously covered.

I'm planning a journey on SWT this Saturday from Egham to London Charring Cross just using day return tickets (not a travelcard.) I have done this many times before, it always works well, and I know that this involves Egham to Waterloo, then walk to Waterloo East and then a short journey accross the Thames to C. Cross. My question is doing the journey for the return 'leg.' Will it still work? It always seems more convenient to walk straight to Waterloo so I've never tried it. However, on Saturday I will have my 88 year old father with me so that is not an option.

Yes, a London Terminals ticket is valid for a journey from Egham to Charing Cross, changing at Waterloo/Waterloo East

I'm amazed that more people don't know you can do this. It effectively makes buying a Travelcard pointless if your London train takes you to Waterloo and all you want to do is visit the West End, Covent Garden or go to the theatre.

Yes of that's the area of London you want to be in, within walking distance of CHX, you don't need a Travelcard for that.

And the same applies to Victoria, Cannon St, Blackfriars, London Bridge, City TL...and has done for 50-odd years.

No you cannot travel beyond City Thameslink.

London Terminals tickets are not valid for travel to/from/via Farringdon, from either direction on Thameslink core.

No, but it did apply to Holborn Viaduct which is what City Thameslink replaced.

Vauxhall is also on the list IIRC - useful from the SE side - but I don't recall that originally being included under LONDON SR. But back then the Victoria line hadn't even reached Victoria, and Vauxhall was much less significant....

Vauxhall was on the list 40-45 years ago as I have vivid memories of using it to watch cricket at The Oval.

No, as noted in post 8 above it is not valid to pass through Farringdon

So if coming from the North a London Terminals ticket is valid as far as City Thameslink. If coming from the South would a London Terminals ticket only be valid as far as Blackfriars? I had always thought it was Farringdon.

No Farringdon is North of City Thameslink, tickets from the south valid to City Thameslink, southbound to King's Cross, or St Pancras. Tickets to London Terminals are not valid to or via Farringdon (except certain HS1 tickets)

Although from Waterloo it's not that far to walk, and the Golden Jubilee Bridges are a pleasant way to amble across the river.

The track distance from Waterloo East to Charing Cross is only about 3/4 of a mile! The walking distance is a bit further, but not much.

E.g. The other week I was travelling to Kings X from Portsmouth and I did go via Waterloo, my back up route was Southern to east Croydon and then a quick change onto Thameslink. My ticket was an off peak return. I could see on br fares my fare valid to London Terminals but i couldn't find what ticket I would need to get to St Pancras via Thameslink. The quoted fare on NRE was about £4 more expensive (with railcard)

From Portsmouth to St Pancras? The Off Peak Return (SVR) is £41.30.

A ticket issued to 'Zone U12 London' enables you to make a single Underground journey to/from any Underground station in Zones 1 or 2 so would be appropriate for your needs. This fare is usually £3 extra to the 'London Terminals' fare (£2 Railcard discounted). Alternatively it can be cheaper and more straightforward to use contactless for the journey across London.

Worth also pointing out that it can sometimes be cheaper to purchase a ticket to a destination such as Finsbury Park, Kentish Town, South Hampstead,which includes a Cross London transfer between the appropriate London Terminals, than a 'Zone U12' fare. You can simply finish short and make a small saving.
