Looking at anytime return between these two locations - national rail website comes up with ticket prices of £33.90 and £34.40. The former is for outward travel via Hayward Heath but return seems to be via any valid route (except HS1). Is this correct - I want to leave from Vauxhall via Clapham Junc and return to Charing Cross.

The £34.40 is the Anytime Day Return route "Not HS1" which would cover you for both routes.

This ticket is priced by SE and the £33.90 via H/H is priced by Southern.

Can I be correct in saying you wish to travel outward :

Vauxhall - Clapham Junction - Gatwick Airport - Eastbourne - St Leonards Warrior Square and return via Robertsbridge & Tunbridge Wells to London Charing Cross?

Although if I understand it correctly the via H/H on the return journey is valid on any route "not HS1" - which is what I want to clarify

It's only valid via Haywards Heath on the return as well (route 00725 in the data - via Haywards Heath, not via Maidstone East, Tonbridge or Ebbsfleet).

Although it's not very clear the NRE site is showing you two different tickets - you can't buy a return with different validity on the outward and return legs.

For the circular journey (out via Haywards Heath, back via Tonbridge) you need the £34.40 ticket. You can buy this on the day for the same price so you don't need to book it in advance.
