London / SE area 'bash' in February?

Whilst I have visited London a few times in the last 10 years or so for a specific reason, I haven't really spent any time just travelling around for the sheer pleasure of it!

I find myself with the opportunity of a Fri/Sat/Sun stay in the Kings Cross area in February.

So far I have three things on my 'to do' list, the 1057 South Ruislip-Paddington service on the Friday, a trip on HS1 and Mail Rail.

I'm looking for suggestions for 'new' things to do that I may well have not seen/done before that are 'new' in recent years, be it routes, traction, stations etc.

So suggestions please! Thanks in anticipation.

You could go check out crossrail/TFLrail. All the branding has changed and there’s a number of the new units out.

Head to Thameslink or Waterloo to check out the new 700/707 units and at Waterloo see the 458’s as five car. You’ll also see the new branding of SWR and livery if you’re lucky enough.

Speaking of branding, LNWR now exists it of Euston.

If you’re heading to Stratford International for HS1, you may also like to do the DLR from there to Canning Town via West Ham.

And at West Ham you’ll find c2c’s small micro fleet of new 387’s, also which are now operating out of Paddington along with new 800’s as the GWML is much more electrified.

Also London Overground took over all the Liverpool Street metro stuff via Hackney and Romford-Upminster and there’s a new station at Lea Bridge.

Apologies if these are things you may have done, but I tried to think what has been new in the last few years as well as small projects such as branding (you may have done the route but now wanna tick it off under the new operator for example).

The new London Bridge, though there's no guarantee of a trip through on Thameslink. And once you are south of the river, there's LoL to Clapham Jn.

If one of your days is Sunday 11th Feb, head out early afternoon to St Albans City station by Thameslink and visit St Albans South Signal Box for an hour or so - that will be our next open afternoon. (2-5pm)
