For a journey as follows:

- Euston to Preston (this Friday evening)
- Preston to Sheffield (Saturday afternoon)
- Sheffield to London, ideally via Doncaster (Sunday evening)

Please can anyone suggest a suitable ticket? London to Preston Off Peak Return is £87.70 but I doubt whether the guard on the Manchester to Sheffield service would be happy with that ticket.

(One person travelling, Network railcard held, no Travelcard held but could make use of a zone 1-2 weekly season if buying one made a big difference)

Thank you

An Off Peak Return, London to Preston is valid via Manchester for certain. It is also valid in/out of St. Pancras so by implication is valid via Sheffield. I would not be sure about returning via Doncaster though.

Looking at the Routeing Guide, a London to Preston Return is valid via Sheffield and Manchester using maps SY+DW...Such a ticket doesn't appear to be valid via Doncaster and the ECML, however.

I haven't looked at how a travelcard could change things, but the following should be fine:

Ticket 1: £82.40 London-Brierfield off peak return, route "any permitted"
Ticket 2: £2.50 Meadowhall-Sheffield anytime day single
Ticket 3: £2.50 Sheffield-Meadowhall anytime day single

On Friday, the outward part of ticket 1 allows you to travel London-Rugby-Crewe-Preston on map EP.
On Saturday, use the outward part of ticket 1 to travel Preston-Accrington-Burnley Manchester Road (again, on map EP).
In this, you would take advantage of the fact that the outward part of an off-peak return may be used on the day after it was issued to complete a journey which could not be completed on the first day.
On Saturday, use the return part of ticket 1 to travel Burnley Manchester Road-Mirfield-Wakefield-Meadowhall or Burnley-Mirfield-Huddersfield-Meadowhall (on maps WK+EE or SY+PS+ER respectively).
Use ticket 2 to travel Meadowhall-Sheffield.
On Sunday, use ticket 3 to return to Meadowhall.
Then use the return part of ticket 1 to travel Meadowhall-Doncaster-Peterborough-London using the map sequences above.

I think that positive doubleback easement 700593 means that the OP would change from the outward to the return portion of their return ticket when their Preston - Halifax train stops at Accrington.
National Routeing Guide - Easements said:
700593 Doubleback
Customers from Colne, Nelson, Briefield, Burnley Central, Burnley Barracks, Rose Grove, Hapton and Huncoat travelling to or via Burnley Manchester Road may doubleback between Accrington and Rose Grove. This positive doubleback easement operates in both directions.

Thank you for all your help

Incredible how the Brierfield ticket is almost £90 more when routed "via Doncaster"!

It could work like that, but the only trains I can find which goes through Burnley without stopping there are ones from/to Clitheroe which don't stop anywhere between Blackburn and Todmorden.

I only suggested Brierfield rather than Burnley Manchester Road as a destination because I was thinking about the easements. I don't think it matters either way.

The super off peak is a mere £20 extra, and has exactly the same restrictions between London Euston and Preston. Luckily, you don't need any sort of "via Doncaster" ticket to go via Doncaster.

In summary:

Option 1: £87.40 Preston ticket returning via Manchester and Leicester
Option 2: £93.10 Brierfield + Meadowhall tickets returning via Blackburn and Doncaster

Would it also be reasonable to buy something like Potters Bar to Preston (£90.90) implying a doubleback at Kings Cross on the Sunday? Thank you
