Hi Guys

I am interested in finding out about BR / NSE services in and out of paddington in the late 1980s early 1990s. What kind of locos and DMUs were used on what services?

Thanks
Paul

Local services were in the hands of Pressed Steel class 117 3-car suburban DMUs based at Reading. The local branches were worked by single cars, sometimes with trailers attached. Longer distance workings to Oxford and the daily Westbury train were mk Is with 47s or 50s on. Inter-City trains by the 80s were mostly HSTs, except some loco-hauled 'jumbo' trains to the West of England, which were very long rakes of mk IId/e/f stock hauled by class 50s, often in pairs. The 1985 book has jumbos off Paddington at 09:40 to Penzance, 10:25 to Paignton and 13:40 to Penzance. The 2 daily Hereford > London and return workings were also 50s. The Night Riviera was a 47 turn IIRR.

Here's a picture I took of 50009 and 50002 heading the legendary 09:40 Paddington > Penzance at Reading on 22nd December 1984. My Lords!

Wasn't there a peak times Aylesbury-Paddington loco hauled service headed by a 47?

In the morning it ran from Wolverhampton via High Wycombe, and returned to Birmingham in the evening. It was indeed a 47.

This is brilliant stuff many thanks.

So how many coaches would the 47s and 50s typically haul on the Oxford service and also the West of England Jumbo trains.

Having been into modern train scene for a while and being born in the 1980s i am finding it interesting to research what life was like in BR days.

Regards
Paul

The Oxfords were 7-8 coaches. I think the daily Westbury came out of this fleet as well. Jumbo trains loaded up to 13 bogies, hence the need for double headed 50s over the Devon banks: super power at 5,400 hp! Not sure about the Herefords. I would guess 8-9 coaches, with a mixture of mk II stock.

Have a look at this video to get a flavour of the times: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5FYRZboyqw. Love all the bellowing bashers behind 50033 leaning out of the leading mk I on an Oxford working! 31/4s were used to move and pre-heat stock between Old Oak Common and Paddington.

weren't there also Paddington-Manchester services in the 80s?

I'm not sure. Most services went through to Poole, and by my era the days of 33s between Reading and Poole were over and 47/4s ruled the roost. Now you come to mention it I think there was (of all things) a daily Paddington > Leeds/Hull, with a 47 to Birmingham where it reversed and then split at Sheffield, with the train engine (a 45/1 from Birmingham) proceeding to Leeds, and a 31/4 hauling 4 coaches to Hull. Can't get at the book to check now, but will do so later.

It does sound a lot more interesting then what runs along there now. So were the fast tracks in and out of Paddington soley for the use of the InterCitys or did slower services use them too back then.

Well quite. I had a slight taste of the past on Tuesday night as we rattled out of platform 1 on the Night Riviera, but it was a mere ghost of past glories.

Generally yes, but I never went to Paddington often enough to find out for certain. I lived in West London for a few years in the late 90s and it seemed that way then.

Update. There was indeed a train from Paddington at 06:50, arriving Leeds 12:25 and Hull at 12:43.

Wow, Leeds to Hull in 18mins, we're much worse off today, takes about an hour, maybe we should re-name Leeds - Hull as HS1 and the CTRL is HS2 ;)

The '84 timetable shows a 1747 Paddington - Westbury Mon-Thu with it running through to Plymouth on Fridays. Called at Reading (1819), Thatcham (1835), Newbury (1842), Pewsey (1904) & Westbury (1924).
In the up direction there was an Mon- Fri 0650 Westbury to Paddington calling at Pewsey (0710), Bedwyn (0720), Hungerford (0727), Kintbury (0733), Newbury (0744), Thatcham (0751), Reading West (0804), Reading (0808) & Paddington (0842).

I recall a daily loco hauled service to Fishguard Harbour. Any else remember this? Perhaps a 47 with mk2s.

Yes. 09:50, calling only at Reading, Cardiff and Llanelli, reaching Fishguard at 14:30. Other loco-hauleds on the GWML in 1985 were the Night Riviera which went via Bristol then, a 16:25 to Cheltenham, 18:09 FO to Swansea, 18:42 FO to Bristol, and 21:45 to Fishguard, otherwise all HSTs.

As somebody who travelled out of Padd endlessly in those days, here are a few more bits of info.

The Leeds/Hull train was replaced by a Padd - Llandudno, but this only ran during Summer 86, thereafter the "Cross Country" turns went no further north than Brum/Wolves, although the winter 88/89 timetable saw the 0600 from Padd on a Saturday go through to Manchester. After this point, NSE based locos became the norm, which provided great interest for the Birmingham New Engine men, as even the 47/4's that worked these were "rare" over the Cov - [stn]BHM[/stn] route.

The High Wycombe run tended to produce 50's more often than 47's, based on photos I have seen and personal experience. There were plenty more interesting Mon-Friday turns, as virtually every other departure in the rush hour was hauled - there were turns that terminated at Maidenhead and Twyford, something unthinkable now.

And then, of course, you had the interlopers. 31424/405, 47368 and 47340 were all out on 22nd July 89, due to a major motive power shortage at Old Oak. Have a look at my website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/choppersandmore to see some of these workings.

Cheers
Jason

What is 'Bedwyn turnback'? Trains have always terminated at Bedwyn for as long as I can remember. Indeed, in the 1985 timetable there are precisely NO trains from Bedwyn heading west. Only 3 trains per day calling at Pewsey to boot. The 10:25 Paddington > Paignton 'jumbo' train, the 17:47 Westbury, and 19:00 to Plymouth (loco-hauled on Fridays, HST rest of week).

Ah. Well, since early '80s is the limit of my knowledge, you may well be right.

My limit too..

However, in the '75/'76 timetable I have, there are quite a few trains terminating at Bedwyn from Reading. Roughly a 2 hourly service with a typical turnaround time of about around 9 minutes during the day, i.e. 10:56 arrival - 11:05 departure. No idea if the turnback siding was there back then or the units stayed in the platform. When I get some time I'll put together the Bedwyn timetable from '75 if you want to have a look-see.

OK, put together the '75 Bedwyn line tt for anyone interested. This is the summer timetable, in so much as only the trains which ran during the summer months are included. Couldn't bring myself to include all the seasonal variations and the like. The Paddington - West Country services are included for completeness.

Enjoy.:D
