A friend and I were travelling around London on a Saturday a few weeks back, to see the steam on the Met. We'd bought Off-peak travelcards. A member of London Overground barrier staff (I can't remember which station it was now) tried to tell us that they are not valid before 0930, even on a Saturday (the barriers would not let us through)! Since it was almost 0930 at the time he let us through anyway, but we both have a suspicion that he was talking rubbish. Was he?

Sounds like the ticket clerk at Turkey Street who once refused to sell me a railcard-discounted off-peak ticket on a bank holiday Monday morning.

The person was telling porkies. Three of us travelled from Stanmore on Off-Peak travelcards on Saturday 25 May. I went for a venture round London whilst the Mem and her Mother used the card to get to the Chelsea Flower show. We purchased and departed Stanmore before 09:30.

You can buy these Travelcards from the Visitor shop:

•Anytime Day Travelcard which can be used for travel at any time on the day of validity and for travel for any journey starting before 0430 the following day.
•Off Peak Day Travelcard which can be used on the day of validity from 0930 Monday to Friday, all day Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays. It is also valid for use for any journey starting before 0430 the following day.
•7 Day Travelcard which can be used at any time during the 7 day period of validity and for any journey starting before 0430 the day after the expiry date.

It was odd in general, that day - what with the number of national rail stations the barriers of which refused to let us pass (probably about half of them, compared to zero LU stations), I was starting to wonder by the end of the day if we HAD done something wrong ;) - we both had national rail-issued travelcards (orange stock).

On the other hand, it's an offpeak (some ticket barriers might not know the time?) travelcard (perhaps they need to check where we're going?) with railcard (do they need to check that we have railcards?), so it's not surprised we did get stopped many, many times.

I'm surprised the gates aren't programmed to recognise Sat/Sun/Bank Hol off-peak travelcards before 0930.

It'd be an interesting test to see if the gatelines at a LO station would recognise the following on a weekend or bank holiday before 0930.

1. One Day Travelcard on LU or DLR stock.
2. One Day Travelcard printed on standard NR stock.
3. One Day Travelcard printed on LO type NR stock. (Green roundel in the middle of the ticket). These are also issued at LU stations on the Bakerloo north of Queens Park and Gunnersbury and Kew Gardens on the District. (Silverlink legacy).

... with railcard (do they need to check that we have railcards?)

That may well be the setting which triggered the gates not to work. Child tickets are also notorious for being stopped at large stations, which always annoyed my kids as they like to operate the gates themselves.

Yeah. They turn that feature off pretty quickly when they realise that the station is one that school kids commute to - take them to Salisbury some time ;)

Good to see the staff are trained so well!

Please make sure you write in to LOROL to complain. This is a most basic staff knowledge problem.

I will do - I might need a bit of prodding as I'm still preparing for the tube challenge attempt on Tuesday. I'll be fine after that ;)
