With the opening on the final branch of the ELL on December 9th, TfL have released a promotional movie which shows a speeded up drivers cab view from a 378 of the extension.

TfL estimate 12.3m will use the Clapham Junction branch annually.

It sure is. ELL drivers were all given a copy for route learning, very good quality.

That's presumably why various non-station locations flash up very quickly in that version?

I like that even for a 'promotional' video they can't find anything interesting in the local area to show for Wandsworth Road station!

Here's what the new Overground line diagram looks like.

To be fair, the video shows that Clapham High Street is an interchange for Clapham North tube than anything else!

Peckham Rye got the best of the promotional shots of the town centre and station of the existing SLL stations.

If Overground does take over any more lines, they're going to have to cut their losses and start marking each differently. Wonder if coloured lines with orange borders would be legible, especially when combined with the Tube Map?

Similarly, could such an approach work with light blue-green borders for the different DLR services and green borders for the Tramlink routes?

Can all the trains of London Overground run on all the routes?

Any idea of the minimum number of changes to travel all parts of the line?

Incidentally, LOROL will deep clean Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road and bring it up to TfL standards

They were doing work at Wandsworth Road on the slope up to the platforms when I was there on Tuesday for the weekly RRB :)

Some of them don't have pantographs so are restricted to the (edit) East London Line IIRC (378/1s). Most are 378/2s and can work anywhere :) ...and quite obviously the 378s can not work Gospel Oak - Barking because not all of it is electrified!

And the new network? No idea, although I did do the previous whole network in a day :)

At the risk of going off-topic, no, 4-car trains cannot operate on routes where the platforms are only 3-coaches long, and the electric trains cannot run on the diesel-only "Goblin" line from Gospel Oak-Barking. Then there's issues with DC/AC as stated by causton. (Wasn't there a thread on LO stock recently? You could try a search)

Did you see if any LO station staff are working there yet, if not it should be the case from December 9th?

To put it in some perspective, London Overground took over management of the West Croydon/Crystal Palace branch stations in September 2009 when only Southern trains served those stations until May 2010.

All 378's are 4 car Yorkie, and all stations accept all four cars. It's only the lack of pantographs that stop the /1 on anything but the ELL. The /2's work Watford DC (despite it all being DC) NLL and WLL. They can and do turn up on ELL too. Therefore unless hauled, I believe /1's only ever visit New Cross Gate depot.

How hard is it to bung a 'graph into a /1?
Not hard at all, they've been built to take them. But with so much of LO being third rail only, I guess they decided it wasn't worth fitting them to all trains... yet.

I was thinking, it would be useful to make all LO stock dual voltage for full fleet availability, then I thought about it, and its only Acton/Shepherds Bush to Stratford that is OHL. Seeing as most freight/RHTT/NR test trains are diesel, why did they fill the gaps of third rail with OHL? Why didn't they go the other way for a full DC network? The only reasons I can think of is that ECS moves from mainlines (ECML to MML, GEML to WCML for arguments sake), moves such as 319's to Hornsey and the possible electrification of the Goblin (to connect OHL at Barking). Is that the case?

Did they not start with AC overhead wires and only have 3rd rail where needed (i.e. at Richmond because of tube stock, the ELL because I doubt OHLE would fit in the tube tunnels, the ELL extensions because third rail was already installed, ditto the DC lines) :)

No I mean on the NLL. The NLL used to be 3rd rail from Richmond-Acton, then OHL to around West Hampstead, then I know there was a switch at Camden Road, cause I remember the board, however, I can't remember if the sign said drop pan or lift pan (fairly certain it was toward Stratford). It was still 3rd rail at Highbury and Islington, and possible back to OHL around Dalston Kingsland, and then finally 3rd rail on the Stratford downstairs platform. When they constructed the ELL to run alongside from Dalston to Highbury and Islington and truncated from North Woolwich to Stratford high platforms, they AC'd all the way from Stratford, to just beyond Willesden. I'm wondering why they chose AC when DC is more prominent.

No, it was all DC from well before it was operated by 501s.

The OHLE was originally added for the benefit of freight trains. Passenger trains only started to benefit from this after the 313s replaced the 2-EPBs. The OHLE was gradually extended over time.

For a long time there were only three tracks between Camden Road and just before Dalston Kingsland. One track was OHLE for freight and the other two were DC for trains. So the 313s would drop pan at Camden Road and raise it again at Dalston Kingsland.

With the new track arrangement, the ELL uses the old 'passenger' tracks, whilst the NLL uses the old 'freight' tracks alignment

Oh I know that much, I'm just wondering why they strung up the OHLE to make it continuous OHLE rather than continuous DC.

Also, when (if?) Gospel Oak to Barking gets electrified it'll almost certainly be OHL for the same reason.
Indeed. Doing otherwise would be illogical. And probably wouldn't be permitted anyway.

When i moved to Willesden in 1993 the whole line was (Richmond to North Woolwich. No Clapham Junction service then) Third Rail DC operation. There was at the time a very short section (Dalston Kingsland to Hackney Wick that was dual voltage AC & DC) however the ac mode was rarely used. In 1994/95 the line between Willesden Junction and Camden Road via Gospel Oak was closed. This was done to install overhead wire and AC operation mostly for the then North of London Eurostar services (which failed to happen). The third rail was lifted in this section. Additional overhead wires were put in place between Willesden and Acton and Willesden and Mitre Bridge so that Silverlink could withdraw class 117 operation on the Clapham junction service.

Another bout of engineering works saw the third rail being removed between Dalston Kingsland and Hackney Wick. The ac/DC changeover points were Acton Central/ Mitre Bridge, Camden Road, Dalston Kingsland & Hackney Wick, It is now just at Acton Centra/Mitre Bridge.

Because safety case for it means no more new DC just OHLE unless it's infill now.

Will new maps (TfL map with tube/Overground on, "Oyster Rail Services" map with train lines within the zones also) be released on the 9th to reflect the update?

What train did it pass near the footbridge close to Culvert Road before the lines dive under the SWML?

It didn't look like freight nor the odd Southern service to Clapham High Street from the WLL.

If they could shift more of the freight off onto the Goblin to relieve the NLL and widened the bottleneck west of Camden Road, I'd love to see the DC lines diverted away from Euston and hooked up to the ELL as one continuous DC line.

Was on 378230 yesterday and the maps inside the train already show the Clapham-Surrey Quays service.:)

I forgot to add she does not end her journey at London Bridge but takes the tube to Canary Wharf. Even though this new line would make her journey quicker she thinks it would not make it safer.

That makes it even more odd! Clapham Junction - Waterloo - Canary Wharf is surely is even quicker than the overground, and I can't believe that the Jubilee line is any less packed than southern services to East Croydon and back!
