Some help pse folks. Am looking at being in Newcastle 2 Apr 11. Have some flexibility on when travel out and back (ie could do an overnight or as a day trip) BUT need to be there between say 1400 and 1800....(work out why for yourselves!). Cannot get cost below £91 return - any suggestions?

Bit cheeky maybe, but booking on eastcoast.co.uk immediately gives you 10% off (so £81.90).

I couldn’t see any advantage in splitting at York or Peterborough but it’s not really my area so I don’t know of likely splits. IME it’s always a fairly pricey route simply due to the demand.

Splitting at Sheffield with Advances there are a few options at £66 - obviously this adds to the journey time (and potentially puts you on a DMU for the whole trip :shock:)

I'm getting deja vu here...

I've suggested changing at Peterborough and York but it's up to you to decide whether or not to do so (mainly is the time lost worth the money gained?). Booking on the EC website will save you 10%

edit: Perhaps a mod could move this to Fares, Tickets and Routing?

KGX - PBO
10:10 - 10:56
£12.50
Advance

PBO - YRK
11:17 - 12:27
£33.80 (Off Peak Return)

YRK - NCL
12:58 - 13:57 (do three minutes matter all that much?)
£11.50

==============

NCL - YRK (Sun 3rd April)
8:00 - 8:59
£6.50 (Advance)

YRK - PBO
9:00 - 10:35 (I strongly believe this to be the same train as above
£0.00 (Return ticket)

PBO - KGX
11:02 - 11:55
£12.50 (Advance)

SUM = £76.80

(OT but made me :-?)

Looking at random alternative routes, found this fare:
Code:
21:55	Carlisle [CAR]	London Kings Cross [KGX]	13:39	15h 44m	Changes:3	£57.00 Advance

Via Glasgow Central, Queen St and Edinburgh... I can see that one flying off the shelves!

As I book myself tickets for exactly that journey regularly, and always intending to remain on the same EC train thoughout, I have often managed to save a few pounds by splitting at Peterborough (but not always), or occasionally at Grantham or Newark, but never by looking at splits anywhere further north than that.

If you do, take care to ensure you are booing yourself onto the same train, as the Leeds and Newcastle services are often just 3 or so minutes apart!
