Evening/morning folks,

Got a query from a mate that I couldn't answer, though I'm sure someone here will know:

Where do London Midland have traincrew depots?

Many thanks in advance!

Tim

Some of them;

New street, Snow Hill (I think), Shrewsbury, Crewe, Coventry, Northampton, Bletchley, Watford (Guards only)

Shrewsbury is being ran down at the moment.

Staff leaving/retiring are not being replaced, and the depot will eventually come to an end soon enough.

Bit of an unwanted depot for London Midland, as they all refuse Sunday working, hence ATW having to run the local services!

Really? I guess they should have told me that before they hired me!

Funnily enough, a lot of colleagues from other depots have expressed shock at Shrewsbury having new Conductors... ;)

I am very surprised. All of the LM depots say the same things about Shrewsbury.

I take it you are on different terms and conditions though, and are committed to Sundays?

Indeed! I'm number 5 of 6 new Conductors that have started at Shrewsbury in the last year, so I can imagine the surprise from everybody else! I was quite aware myself when I joined the depot that everyone thought it was being run down. I think it's over a decade since anyone new came in.

And yes, predictably we are on different terms and committed Sundays.

I try not to worry too much about the future of Shrewsbury, but the franchise change in 2017 will be interesting.

ATW (or Wales & Borders before) have worked all the Sunday services from Shrewsbury ever since they took over the route from Central in 2001.

I wouldn't worry about it. With a depot of that size I would imagine either a move to Wolverhampton or transfer to ATW would be forthcoming if it did shut. It's another depot that got hit hard by the splitting of Central when they lost their work to Leicester etc I think. Is it still just Birmingham and Rugeley at Shrewsbury ? Is Rob the ATE still about at Telford? I did fear for him when LM announced their revenue restructuring.

Yeah, there's plenty of scope should Shrewsbury close! I've heard all about the routes our train crew used to sign, I'm a little jealous but at least I've not known any different! It is indeed still just Birmingham and Rugeley.

Rob is still around, he's moving to Telford booking office to fill my old position after the recent 'restructuring' removed all the ATEs.

That's good to hear - couldn't ask for a nicer chap, I was a regular customer of his for 20 odd years before I moved away and him and his colleagues had a lot to do with getting me into railways as a little lad in the first place. Must pop in and see him at some point when I'm next at home. Shame he's moving off train though - he always had quite a loyal crowd of regulars!

I hear the same about Leamington Spa, from people who work at Leamington Spa.

LM also have a guards depot at Stourbridge Junction as far as I am aware.

One of the nicest people I've met on the railway! We're all pleased that he's staying, but as you say it's a shame he's not on the train anymore as he really does have quite a rapport with the regulars - to the point they were writing in asking for LM to keep him on the trains!

There are still (typically cushty ;)) Sunday jobs though for LM Salop men though. Part of the reason Walsall stoppers are worked by 170s on a Sunday is to create work for Salop men.

Are you sure about that? I thought it was just a messroom there.

On behalf of my friend - thanks for the replies! :)

Also, does anyone know what routes any of the depots sign? (more angled towards guards than drivers)
