London Midland 'Great Escape' Offer

From 27 December 2009 - 3 January 2010, you can enjoy a whole day’s unlimited travel on our trains for just £10 - or £20 first class! Perfect for a day out to some great destinations, for visiting friends and relatives or, if you have the energy, a trip to the sales.

Buying your tickets
You can buy your ‘day ranger’ tickets at any staffed station on our network. You'll need to download a special voucher and bring this with you so that we know which day you’re travelling and how many tickets you're entitled to buy.

Tickets will be available to collect at stations from 15 December, so you can avoid the queues by picking yours up in advance.

This, I seem to recall, results from a 'Remedial Plan/Agreement' London Midland has made with the DafT as a result of the cancellation of pretty much all services on September 6th - a kind of apology to passengers, it would appear. It's not what I'd call well publcised on their website, however, but seems like a good offer for a day out just after Christmas!

rather silly of them to insistthat the passenger choose which day to travel on some 3 weeks in advance !

Ok so the number of vouchers is limited to 6000 - Why not just let people download them and then they can choose in the holiday period, when they know whether they can go and see Auntie or go and but something in the sales.

Just baffles me why the TOC's put spanners in a seemingly good offer - almost as if they are grudgingly offering the tickets.

Well this gives me a good reason as any to explore London Midland's area as well travel on 323s which I've never used before.

They were told to offer them (or something of the type) by the DfT.

They do seem to have forgotten to add a morning peak restriction on the normal working days though!

I would suspect it is to do with 'crowd control', ie managing demand. One of the aims of offers normally isto promote the company, in the hope people will use them again. If every train is so packed that people can barely get on the trains, they are hardly likely to go away with a good impression and travel again. I remember many years ago when there was the 'Teddy Tickets' Family Railcard promotion - King's Cross was absolutely heaving on Saturday evenings, it was like the whole audience from a concert had descended on the station and trains departing compeletely wedged.
