The 158s are very suitable units for what they are used on such as the Edinburgh-Dunblanes which are around an hour end to end and share the 100mph E&G mainline for almost half their running distance, hence pasthing 90mph units is much easier than 75mph 156s, especially when late running

The all stops Dunblane service justifies 158s (I'm sure it'll be 170 run when the Falkirk High line is electrified), but bear in mind that 156s are doing routes like Manchester Airport - Manchester Piccadilly - Liverpool

However, using 158s on routes like Anniesland/ Whifflet/ Cumbernauld/ Wick beggars belief. Even a 156 would be overkill on the first three examples there (when routes like Middlesbrough - Newcastle have Pacers on them).

Not correct. When DfT made Northern sublease the 158s the Northern Rail franchise was only until 2011 and has since been extended until 2013, meaning it's impossible for Northern to have subleased them until 2014 as that would have been 3 years longer than the franchise at the time of the sublease.

I *think* the sublease was originally only until December 2008 and got extended until December 2010. In December 2010 the lease is to be transferred to Scotrail and Scotrail will keep the 158s until the end of the franchise in 2014.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Only passing on what has been quoted elsewhere, I understood that all ScotRail stock is on lease until end of current franchise in Dec 2014 and that the 8 158s are no longer sub-leased from Northern, but are/going to be on-lease direct to ScotRail.

So the cascade of 150's from LO is about to begin and be completed by end of november. Also is the line to newcraighill to be elctrified (norders railway) cause that would release how many DMU's?

Just wondering now that cascading is getting closer has anymore information come to light on what is happening?

As far as I know, the Newcraighall branch is not being electrified, as the Borders Railway to Tweedbank, when it opens, will also not be electrified. At least, I can’t find any mention of it being electrified amongst all the other schemes and the Borders Railway prospectus. There aren’t going to be any DMUs released from Scotrail until the electrification programme is much more advanced than at present, and even then , diesel units will be needed to operate the Tweedbank services, so there’ll more than likely be an internal Scottish cascade of Sprinters.

Not happening just yet - 3 172s went back to Derby the other day, and all based at Willesden will return in due course. Noise levels found to be above acceptable.

Make of that what you will!

Yeah it's infuriating the way that Scotrail seem to be hanging onto their DMUs as their electrification scheme pans out fairly extensively across the Central Belt. I mean, it's great that Scotland's railways are one of the few places that offer decent capacity matched to the peaks and off peaks (They have the opportunity to run 6 carriage Turbos), and I'm not saying that they have over-capacity, but it does seem imbalanced compared to all the overcrowding issues in England and Wales.

On the subject of 172s, I think that standard issue earplugs are the way forward for regular passengers and train crew ;): It would be cheaper than all these Derby modifications, and other areas of the country need the cascaded units!

Though realistically I appreciate what Bombardier are doing in attempting to iron out the faults in this new class, instead of just sending out a whole fleet of duff trains to cause problems everywhere as has happened in the past with various manufacturers.

The 175s were built for North West regional routes (which included the North Wales coast at the time) to replace 101s and loco hauled. When the Welsh Assembly wanted an 'All Wales' franchise they took all the 175s. Yes 185s were procured for the Manchester Airport routes, but had the 175s been able to remain in the North West it could have meant longer trains on TransPennine Express.

The 175s transferred to Wales and Borders, with some subleased back to FNW. They were used by TPE up until 2006 by which time they were leased by ATW and had been replaced by 185s anyway.
