Is there a map somewhere that shows London Rail lines overlaid over a proper map - not one of those underground type diagrams?

There is also OpenRailwayMap, which is based on OpenStreetMap data.

If you want a paper map, then something like Philip's Street Atlas of London will give you detailed information on stations over and underground, the Croydon tram system - and a lot more beside.

You need to take the position of tube lines with a large pinch of salt on a lot of publicly available maps. I recall a lot of fuss a number of years back when someone drove a pile driver through the roof of a tube tunnel that wasn't where the map showed it. At the subsequent enquiry, it was discovered that most maps were singularly inaccurate in this respect.

In the incident in #10-#11, the tunnel wasn't shown in the wrong place. It wasn't shown at all. The developers shouldn't have relied on that map.

Is that “overlaid over a proper map” as requested by the OP though? I had assumed he wanted the street or surface features mapped as well.
