Howdy.

I've had a query from a friend who's going to be doing London-Leicester in a group of 5 on several upcoming Fridays - I've advised him about advance tickets but wondered if there are any useful splits that anyone knows of and what the restrictions on the tickets are?

They plan to arrive in Leicester 1800 but can travel earlier if it's much cheaper and return on the same day around the time of the last train at 2200.

Many thanks.

Edit: is there Groupsave on this route? Does it help?

You're unlikely to find many splits, not least because most of the services run non-stop London>Leicester, or stopping only at Market Harborough.

Yes, the groupsave is valid as far as I know, though it's not a ticket I'm very familiar with. Your friends would have to pay for three off-peak tickets (groupsave covers groups of 4, paying for 2 tickets), coming to £198 in total. They can do cheaper on advance tickets, particularly looking three weeks or more in advance, but the groupsave obviously gives more flexibility.

Have you tried National Express funfares (coach)? Sorry if this offends the board...

I don't think they'll go for that as they're only in Leicester for 4 hours. I'll mention it - it's how I last got back from Leicester (at 0400).

Does anyone know the restrictions on off-Peak and Super off-Peak tickets

If journey time is not vital you could catch London Midland from Euston to Nuneaton and then to Leicester.

The £66 London - Leicester Off-Peak Return takes Restriction 9J:
Outward Travel
You may travel on any train that is scheduled to depart London St Pancras International between 0901 & 1629 (inc.) and at or after 1859. On Fridays the Outward portion of an Off-Peak ticket is valid anytime after 0901 from London St Pancras International.

Return Travel
You may travel on any train that is scheduled to arrive London St Pancras International at or after 1005.

The £47.80 London - Leicester Super Off-Peak Return takes Restriction CJ:
Outward Travel
You may travel on any train that is scheduled to depart London St Pancras International between 1026 & 1515 (inc.) and at or after 1859.

Return Travel
You may travel on any train that is scheduled to arrive London St Pancras International at or after 1129.
GroupSave is not available with these fares.

GroupSave is available on day and period London - Bedford tickets but these fares are set by FCC and we saw in this thread that passengers may encounter difficulties using them on EMT whether or not they are valid.

GroupSave is also available on off-peak day Bedford - Market Harborough and Market Harborough - Leicester returns, but your friends could only use this combination on stopping trains.
