London has a new Airport!

London now has a new Airport - LondonOxford Airport.
That's right, 60 miles north of London used to be Oxford Airport - but its now LondonOxford!

“This (renaming) will help promote recognition of us globally to the overseas business aviation sector, many of whom were not aware of the availability of an airport to the north-west of London.”

The airport is the ninth in the UK to bear the London name, alongside: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City, Southend, Ashford, and Biggin Hill.

Oxford has overtaken London Ashford Airport as the furthest away from the capital, with the Kent airport only measuring 56 miles from the city centre compared to Oxford’s 60 miles.

That's pretty stupid to claim to be an airport for a city that is THAT far away. There are three airports in Melbourne, the main one at Tullamarine which replaced Essendon Airport which is still in use for freight, private jets, Police Air Wing and the Ambulance Air Wing and then there is Avalon Airport which is so far away from Melbourne that its barely worth going to and only JetStar fly there.

And at Avalon Airport there is no rail connection to Melbourne, nor at Tullamarine either, just an expensive taxi ride, that costs more than the flight.

Does make sense from a business point of view. If your short of cash in this economic hard time and you don't want to pay hefty Farnborough landing charges then you can land at Oxford and pay the £2k for a helicopter transfer to the City, which you'd have to pay anyway from Farnborough.

Do smaller aircraft fly from 'London' Oxford to London Heathrow? Because if they did then you could probably get better parking in Oxford and get a little flight to Heathrow to get a connecting flight overseas.

There wouldn't really be any point in running a 40 mile flight, especially as the two places are connected by motorway and rail, well I'm not sure how far Oxford airport is from the M40 or the centre of town but it can't be a million miles away.

It's more based on business jet users (coming from out of the country) flying to connect with the Premiair Helicopter Shuttle to the City. It's pretty smart of what they have done and saves paying the large fee's of Farnborough and Heathrow. I imagine it will be used pretty well. http://www.premiairshuttle.com/images/frameset/map.png

You guys are too young by a long way to remember the BN-2 Islander shuttles from Heathrow to Gatwick...they landed on / took off from what was then 28L or 10R, and went via Epsom. Previously there had been helicopter shuttles. We used the 727 Green Line RF coaches to get to Gatwick for spotting....the slow way down via Kingston, Epsom Downs, etc.
