London - Exeter query

Hi,

My wife needs to travel to Exeter this weekend and I'd like some clarification on tickets for her.
Outbound on Friday it would be much easier for her to take the SWT from Waterloo to Exeter Central, so she will get an off peak return via Honiton @£18.15 with Priv.

On her return on the Sunday there are buses between Andover and Guildford which as she will have luggage etc. it would be far easier for her to use the train to Paddington which has a higher fare via Taunton.

I'm guessing that she would be able to get an excess to a via Taunton fare? and this is would be at half the difference?
Also, Would the excess be to the SVR or could she excess to the SSR?

The excess should be to the appropriate ticket which in your case would be the SSR.

Most staff are great and will get it right but there are some who are poorly trained or might try and make up their own rules.

many Thanks for that Hadders, I wasn't sure and wanted to make sure I was advising her correctly and that it was half the difference for the Change of route

But must the ticket office staff offer to excess a ticket in this way once the journey (ie. the outward leg) has commenced? A number have argued (presumably based on something??!!) that they can only do this before the journey starts. I have had very mixed results with this ...

As far as I know a change of route excess can be obtained on board without penalty.

They are incorrect and the excess can be obtained for the return leg even once the outward leg is finished. It can also be obtained on board without penalty. I have done this on numerous occasions myself.
