London day trip

Hi all,

Taking my little boy to London tomorrow.

Unfortunately its too cold for him to stand on stations, so it's train rides all day (with the objective of getting emu numbers (not underground stock though).

If it hadnt been too cold for him, I would have done Clapham for 377's/ 378's, Bethnal Green for 317/321/360's, Kings X for 365's, West Ham for 357's and London Bridge for 375/465/466's.

I'm only in need of the classes mentioned,so I suppose my question is..........

What rail rides will pass stabling points etc to see the most of these classes ?

I have about 6 hrs and want to stick to zones 1-6 unless it will be worth it

ELL down to New cross gate and you will pass the LO depot - at NXG youll see loads of mixed southern fleet pass through and you can ride them up and down - Id go as far as Norwood Junction then back up to London Bridge then tube to Liv St for some fun there which you can mix in with Stratford to get to West Ham

Up and down between Hither Green and Orpington should get you plenty of Networkers.

Should be warm enough on the platforms at Canada Water if you want 378s!

Fenchurch Street - Barking will help you pass West Ham depot for the 357's. You also then have a choice of rides back from there, both tube and LO if you wanted to try and do something different.

Barking town centre is literally 30 seconds walk from the station as well and has a small shopping centre and also a few fast food joints. Ive used barking before as a kind of lunchtime stop to try and break the day up... free toilets as well !!!!.

also, maybe Victoria to East croydon (I think thats still zone 6 ?!?!). its a good 30 minute ride, so a chance to warm up, a ride on a 377 and when you get to east croydon you have the tram link outside in case your lad wanted to something different (To the best of my knowledge, the tramlink is included in an all zones ticket, but im sure someone else can clarify that?!)

Yes, any travelcard which includes zone 4, 5 or 6.

The Kingston Loop (although more like half a loop tomorrow) will be seeing quite a few services tomorrow too with Windsor and Reading services getting diverted that way. Could then connect onto the Overground/Underground at Richmond if you get one of the Kingston-Barnes trains by changing at Kingston or the Sutton loop at Wimbledon for some 319 (although I think 377s are straying onto there) action, as they won't be down south for too much longer.

I'll be out there bashing the Kingston loop tomorrow afternoon.

Although not mentioned in your original post, you could try the following short hops out of London terminals:

Paddington - Ealing Broadway. Takes you past Acton Yard, where hopefully there will be several 59s and 66s stabled. I believe there are 8 trains and hour in each direction.

Euston - Harrow & Wealdstone. Takes you past Wembley yards, have seen 66s and 92s there on many occasions.

If you are looking for somewhere warm to watch EMUs, then there's a café on Balham station where you can see all of the running lines. So potentially you can see all Southern & GatEX services out of Victoria - 377s, 442s, 455s.

Balham is a great suggestion. You could also go back and forth on the DLR between Lewisham and Greenwich and pick up some more Networkers/376s.
