London Day Trip / Unit Bash 10/09/13

Hi all

Decided on a trip to London for a spot of number collecting. I intend to get a day travel card and whizz round the various Terminus and maybe a few other places.

Paddington will be my starting / finish point. Are there any of the terminus that aren't worth visiting i.e. will see the same units at another or are not very spotter friendly?

The list of Terminus I have is as follows:

Blackfriars Station
Cannon Street Station
Charing Cross Station
Euston Station
Fenchurch Street Station
Kings Cross Station
Liverpool Street Station
London Bridge Station
Marylebone Station
St Pancras Station
Paddington Station
Victoria Station
Waterloo Station

Any additions to the list?

Any other recommendations for unit heavy locations (apart from Clapham Junction) especially south of the River as I'm quite lacking in Southern & S.Eastern stock.

Not much point hanging around Charing Cross or Cannon Street when all the trains to and from those terminni pass through London Bridge.

London Bridge in the rush hour is brilliant, will need a fire resistant notepad or you might set fire to it using the pen too much :lol!

But no seriously, it's a bit like Clapham, a train in sight somewhere even in off-peak, but the peak has the advantage of seeing the rush hour sets and trio's of 375's. The Class 465/466's have numbers on one side, so can be difficult when they are sandwiched between two other 465/466's. I tend to note one of the side carriage numbers in that case, and cross reference it in my NREA book or on the ABrail website for the unit number.

Southern services also go from the lower platforms, and should see 455/456/377's there, and one 442 set if you are there for the evening rush hour, and also the 171's.

The termini aren't always so good for spotting. London Bridge has already been pointed out as a good hot spot for units and you're aware of Clapham Junction. Liverpool Street's largely built over and so not good for platform ending so a trip out to Bethnal Green will enable you to see everything in and out of there. I don't think a Travelcard will get you onto the EMT platforms at St. Pancras - only the underground Thameslink ones. In which case one of the other stations on the Thameslink core would be a less oppressive location. Vauxhall's good for trains in and out of Waterloo. Similarly, West Ham sees everything in and out of Fenchurch St. You can also take a short hop on the Jubilee Line to Stratford from there (or to London Bridge in the other direction).

Same with the SouthEastern side - and that side has a much better view of the Eurostar movements...

Never considered that option on the SET side, shall have to bear it in mind. As for EMT and FCC stuff, a trip out to West Hampstead Thameslink will get it all. If you're on a Z1-6 Travelcard heading further on to Mill Hill Broadway's even better though.

WCML stuff, South Kenton has good views.

Of course, your trip has probably already been done so a bit pointless this now!
