Can anyone give me an idea of realistically how long such a journey would take via DLR and Tube?

Thanks!

If ur catching the tube all the way then it'll take roughly 2 hours. May take a little less if no disruptions etc but you'll have to change to the Piccadilly line en route.

You could speed it up a bit by making use of Heathrow Connect and changing at Ealing Broadway.

Be aware that you will have painful changes whichever way you go, for example.

London City Airport - Bank - Monument - Barons Court - Heathrow would seem the most sensible kind of route, but this involves dragging whatever you have up a single escalator or fixed stairway from the DLR arrival platforms (turn RIGHT!) up to the District Line platforms at Monument. However, this is the only non-step free change on route.

Another example, proberbly quicker, would be changing at Stratford and Holborn, but again, quite steppey.

If you have heavy luggage and aren't travelling in the peaks, it could be advised to travel via Canning Town, Westminster and Barons Court, but this still isn't quick. However, it is entirely step free from street access and between platforms (but not onto the trains at every station, you'd have a step onto the District at Westminster and while changing at Barons Court (Same platform interchange). So if you're dragging luggage this could be a good route outside the peaks, in the peaks I'd proberbly recomend a similar route but changing at West Ham where the District Line will be a tad quieter, still pushing it out to Barons Court or possibly even Acton Town depending on how busy the Piccadilly Line is that day.

Either way, I would look at allowing around 2 hours to complete the journey, unless you want to add in Heathrow Connect by either changing at Stratford and Ealing Broadway, or West Ham (For Paddington Direct), or West Ham, Mile End and Ealing Broadway.

It would take around 90 minutes, 82 minutes to be precise but you have to be prepared for minor delays and sometimes the trains can take a while to come in off-peak.

I would recommend going from London City Airport to Canning Town on DLR, then Jubilee line westbound to Green Park, then the Piccadilly line for the rest of the route. :)

Green Park currently has no step free access to the Jubilee Line, if you need Step Free (Large Luggage, Children etc.) then I'd recomend changing at Westminster and Barons Court. (Not Earl's Court, it's just not nessesarry when you can do it a lot easyer at Barons Court or Hammersmith, the former being quieter.)

which is exactly what the tube map app suggests.

Thanks all for the advice, yes step free access would be a necessity, I'm not the most mobile at the best of time, but I will have a large case of around 17Kg on wheels and hand luggage. I hadn't realised it would take so long, so i'm glad I asked now. Thanks all.

What time of day are you travelling? You may even want to consider changing at West Ham as it's less stressey than Westminster, but, changing at Westminster is a quicker journey, and isn't usually that hard to get on board.

Just take in mind that between Westminster and Barons Court (where you'll change for the picc line) you have one (possibly two, but unlikely) stations where that platform will be on the right hand side (this is South Kensington) the rest will be on the left, so you could have your luggage over there, so long as it is not blocking the door. The doors open on the right at Barons Court, and on the left at Westminster.

I land at London City at 18:15, so after disembarkation and baggage claim, I'd guess it will be around 18:45 to 19:00.

City airport is small, friendly and fast. I would be surprised, if you land on time, if it takes you as long as 30mins to clear passport control/baggage reclaim.

I agree Nym's advice over changing. DLR to Canning Town, lift then Jubilee Westminster, lift then District line to Barons Court, across the platform then the Piccadilly line - job's a goodun!

One thing to be cautious of - make sure that you take a Piccadilly line train going to Heathrow T5 and not T4!!!
